After trying Brown Bogie, I was quite eager to smoke this. Unfortunately, this doesn't come close to the Brown, and is indeed disappointing
There's an unmistakeable flavor of barbecue here. Nothing like barbecue sauce, not exactly meat or char. The flavor is monotone, not good for a long smoke. I'm not in love with this tobacco, the Brown Bogie rope is much better, but I'm sure there will be times when Black Irish X will end up back in my pipe. It might take some blending, though.
Quality tobacco, just not my thing.

Try drying it until it's crispy then smoking it, my first experience I loved it then I added the slightest moisture to it and I found it to be this unpleasant kind of oily taste, but when it was crispy dry it had a nice kind of charred steak taste

Non-existent. I smoked it in a Missouri Pride, though, and it might not have been big enough.

I've never tried rope tobacco, but I intend to experiment with it at some point - would you suggest starting with the brown bogie HMHaines?

Brown Bogie is by any means the best choice, there is the brown Irish as well, which is slightly thicker and with a ever so slightly lighter nicotine content.

This one improves if you slice it, rub it out in a bowl, and leave it to dry for a day or two. It probably helps to age it as rope for months or a year or two. It's not the nicotine buzz of the brown rope (I've heard) but it has some nic and pretty good flavor, if you wait for it. For whatever reasons, it is one of these blends that requires some patience, but I thought it repaid the effort.

I've only tried the Samuel Gawith Black XX, but it is similar to what you describe--good for when I want a change of pace, but a bit monotone, and quite unusual. And like you, I don't like it as much as the brown rope, and find the nicotine less.

Got ta try it. Smoked SG black XX. It definitely has a grilled stake flavor thru out the bowl. Also SG Brown # 4. Taste of a very good cigar with somewhat of a sweet note. Neither are full time smokes but definitely a change of pace. Will surely have ta give this one a try.
