Ash - I just went through your thread again more carefully. First, congrats on landing that beautiful Alden pipe; it's another great example of Ryan's work. Second, your text had me laughing pretty good because I have known that feeling on so many things. Enjoy!

So one doesn't build a classic car just to leave it in the garage; you need to drive it. I took the Alden for its maiden voyage, and we cruised with some Frog Morton - On The Bayou from my cellar. I don't think I realized how big the chamber on this pipe is, and under packed it, but still got 30 minutes with some relights.

Nice open draw, very very cool smoker and so comfortable in my grip. The blast is mesmerizing and I could not stop poring over the detail. An instant friend.

Ryan's a master of his craft, and this author is a great example of such. The proportions are just perfect!

Just me, but Haunted Bookshop straight or mixed with 25% red virginia seems so fitting for this masterpiece.

I tried Haunted Bookshop once; the nic hit was way more than I wanted. I've been leery since I seem to be pretty sensitive to nicotene levels.

After meeting Ryan Alden a number of years ago at the St. Louis Pipe Show, I knew I wanted one of his pipes. At the time, I just didn't have the ability. A few weeks ago I reached out to Ryan to discover all he'd been going through, but that he was working to get back into pipe making. Lucky me, I literally slid into a window for a commission to have Ryan carve an Author shape. I've been out of town and returned to find my new Alden Author waiting for me.

Here it is. Strawberry Briar, Deep Craggy blast and a Cumberland bit. It's 5 inches long and is a perfect fit in my hand. I'm blown away.
