A New Beginning...Cue Dramatic Music.

So, about a week into a revived pipe smoking meditation habit. I found a jar of tobacco, at least a year old, but it felt fresh so gave it a go. Sitting outside with sun rising and my morning book and watching the rabbits graze on bird feed (go figure). A quite nice smoke. Alas, the jar was unmarked, I have no idea what the blend was! So, I have to start over. My plan is to buy some of the mass produced blends (Captain Black, Borkum Riff, that kind of thing) and then move to more nuanced tobaccos. Shooting in the dark here so I thought I would start at square one. Sadly the "Aromatics" are pretty much off the table with my Benevolent State Guardianship of, ...well I dont know what they are guarding me from but I cant buy it. So the journey begins anew and So it Goes.

I just finished a bowl outback with our Rabbits supervising.

I don’t know your location and what’s available to you online or at a Brick & Mortar but IMHO nothing wrong with at-least trying the Codger Blends like the Captain. Half/Half, Sir Walter Raleigh etc.
i started off with them and smoked a ton of Borkum Riff in the late 80’s but once I started smoking Dunhill Blends and then got a Taste of McClelland’s I never looked back.
There’s so many options today that are actually fantastic so there’s endless possibilities to explore.
Try some C&D Blends, GL Pease, Peterson and work your away around a variety of those to figure out what you really like.

Yes Poe had a major influence here in Richmond as well as Big Tobacco.

Maybe make a day trip to PA or even here in NY....yucky. Tobacco in PA is available and cheap.....compared to Mass and NY.
We have one rabbit that hangs out in our yard. We have dogs around, but they don't chase rabbits....they only chase bears.
This one rabbit just holds very still when the dogs or cat approach it. When they get too close, the rabbit slowly hops away. I think he knows about prey drive.

I find it odd that so many of the northern colonies involved in founding this great nation impose such impingements on personal freedoms. But then again, MA lists itself as a “commonwealth”, to that’s a sign…
I agree with Sig, a day trip may be in order. Watch City is great as well, and carries a lot of good stuff.
I’d revisit each of the major genres (English, Virginia, VaPer, codger, etc) then dial in from there.

A nice smoke this morning amid the bird chorus (cacophony?). A bit cool with the breeze. Had some trouble keeping the pipe lit, I suspect the two year old Captain Black I found on a bookshelf. Could have been technique...we shall see.

As to logic and politicians; a rare animal. In this state we are required to carry a firearm concealed if we own firearms. Concealed Carry is the only license issued. It baffles me that it makes sense to my lawmakers that this is safer for the general public (or law enforcement) than exposed carry like Texas.

As to Rabbit behavior; Fascinating...had one this April acting as Yard Warden chasing off squirrels intruding in the forage area. Not my idea of rabbit behavior.

As to LJ Peretti and Watch City Cigar; Bought one of their Cavendish blends yesterday (online) from LJ Peretti. A bit of a sticker shock at $80.00, especially when I am in trial and error mode. Too late I saw that they carried a Cavendish sampler at half that price. C&D Blends, is that a brand or a type of Tobacco?

Since you're in MA, you might also have a look at Wilke in Fall River, they also carry their own line of tobaccos, and some are highly regarded.

FYI the "What are you smoking?" thread in Pipe Tobacco Discussion is where you can log your smokes. I just use a word file that I add my smoke-addled impressions to.

oh they're protecting the children from having to deal with people that understand how statistics actually work.
The thought is since most people especially children often start tobacco with something flavored that must mean they've been enticed by the flavoring and that almost no one started smoking or dipping because they like the way cherrys taste, but because they wanted to try tobacco.
So maybe they're protecting you from roving bands of children stealing your smokes???

My start into tobacco was with a can of Hawken when I was 12 or so. It was far too sweet and didn't taste like tobacco.

Don't go crazy on captain black unless you've had it before, I can't tolerate blends that have a ton of pg on them, it's why they'll never dry out. It irritates my mouth. I grew up in a smoking environment. Both parents smoked cigarettes. Brothers used dip. Relatives smoked pipes, cigars and cigarettes. You name it, they burned it or chewed it

I never used any of it before starting to smoke a pipe on September 13, 2011.

So it’s hard to say I guess what motivates some to befriend nicotine.

Spot on SB..... I have thought the same thing. There's Massachusetts, a key player in the forming of the nation and the winning of the Revolution and now, they embrace every liberal cause possible and try to curtail many of the freedoms that we all enjoy..... I just don't get it.
But I would like to visit Watch City some day.
