The extra shilling was the salesman's commission, so things like houses and motorcars were quoted in guineas. Even fur coats in shop windows were priced in guineas.
When I started smoking St Bruno's flake, I remember a tin costing a shilling and something - an outrageous sum at the time.

And here I thought Dunhill would have been established in the 1700's, and they open a tobacco

shop in 1907. The social climbers. I think Iwan Ries was established in 1857. Oh well, Chuck Levi,

the reigning elder at Iwan Ries, did pat them on the head saying they (Dunhill) were his favorite pipes.

Fascinating timeline. Samuel Gawaith really goes back; the Lake District, where they are located, is

one of the most beautiful areas in the world, in my opinion. With a little late evening fog in the summer,

and sunset at about 10:30 p.m., you enter a time machine. William Wordsworth lives.
