Many years ago, I inherited my Grandfather's double-bowl hawkbill meerschaum, made sometime before 1917 (there's a dedication label in the case -- commemorating grandfather's brother's death in WWI). I've smoked it on and off (that's what pipes are made for ) and since there's no maker's name or any markings on it I asked around about it. Nobody seemed to know anything about it! Here's a picture of it (I should note that it originally had an amber stem, which I've put away and had a lucite stem made, along with a band for safety):

and with the inner bowl removed:

Imagine my surprise when what looked exactly like this pipe appeared on eBay!! I patiently waited (well, I wasn't THAT patient) until the last minute, put in a bid -- and won! It arrived today, and while fractionally smaller, it appears to me that it comes from the same carver. It's never been smoked until now. I'm just delighted to have this R. Lewis pipe which the seller dates to 1905-1910. What do YOU think?

You can colour me happy! :)

Very cool, it will be neat to watch the unsmoked one color, as you smoke it. I'm curious to see how many bowls it takes to catch up to your grandfathers pipe.

Wow that's pretty cool, newbie question here. What is the purpose of the bowl removing? Easier clean?

Frankly, I've no idea!!! It seems to slow down the colouring a lot, but I think the real reason is to cool the smoke. Rather like a calabash, there's this huge volume of air for the smoke to be in before it gets to the stem. FWIW, it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference -- the smoke is cool, but the meer is as hot as a normal single bowl one!

A pair of unique pipes, and a wonderful story. I hope YOUR grandchildren can pass along the tale!

I think your grandfather and great uncle would be proud. I had the same question as Red. I didnt know the purpose of the double bowl. I've not seen that before.

Very nice meers. That really does look like the same maker. Wish I could help you with identification, but good find anyway.

dhintonka: Your remark reminds me of blues singer, grandmother aged Coco Taylor's appraisal of her sex life "It's dirty work, but someones got to do it."

Thanks, captainprophesy -- appreciate that we didn't end up cross-bidding!! I'm really stoked about finding this one!
Cheers, Dallas
