Nice work strange! It's now ready for a couple more centuries. Great piece of tobacco pipe history thanks for sharing.

If the two letter are BB. it could be "Benjamin Barling" and you'd have one very old and possibly valuable pipe.
see down the page. very much like yours.

After closer scrutiny the letters appear to be "DH", maybe it's a Dunhill ;) Haha.

Wow, that is a big pipe. Amazing work on the stem -- do you make pipes or regularly make and repair stems? What a cool find.

I have made around 8 pipes and have made/repaired several stems for these antiques pipes, I'm thinking about offering it as a service.

That is one fantastic pipe! Hats off to you, sir, for getting it back into good nick.
How does she smoke? I'll bet it's a mammoth task, cleaning that stem...

It smokes very well, nice and cool, the isn't too hard to clean, you just remove it from the bowl and use a Churchwarden pipe cleaner from both ends, light the pipe is the tough thing about it, the cap blocks your view of the bowl so you can't really see what you are doing.

Now...what would have been smoked in that pipe, back when it was new?

Good question, I was wondering the same thing, likely straight Virginia by the original owner, guessing that would have been the smoke of the era (any other ideas?), the stem did have a sweet aromatic smell when cleaning it, that was probably from one of it later owners, the mystique a pipe like this holds is very interesting indeed.

I saw a similar piece at an antique shop and didnt know quite what to make of it. $180. It had silver fittings all over it. Heavy thing.
Maybe I should go see if its still there?

For that kind of money it should be in very good condition IMO.
