A Look At The Amsterdam Pipe Museum

I came across this while falling down a Google-fueled rabbit hole. There is a pipe museum in Amsterdam it turns out, with a lot of interesting pipes on display. I'm not sure if their entire catalog is online, but worth a look if you have some free time today.

I knew there must be a major pipe museum somewhere in the world, and trust Amsterdam to have it, along with the sex museum and the Van Gogh museum and similar unique attractions. I've been to Amsterdam once, and I'd wish I'd known it was there, though I wasn't pipe smoking at the time. The street scene there is remarkable. And dogs are everywhere, in bicycle baskets, on the street cars, and under the examining tables in doctor's offices. It is a one of a kind city.

This museum has been widely written about in many places for quite a while. I guess I heard of it 10-15 years ago.

Another major attraction in Amsterdam, if you get there at the right time, in May as I recall, is when the herring catch can be legally sold. Street venders and restaurants sell it in quantity and it is delicious, just a happy unending festival for fish lovers. Another culinary pleasure year round are the "rice tables," Indonesian food served buffet style, which is a fabulous treat to overeat.

I had a good time when I was in Amsterdam. Truly a one of a kind experience.

If I ever get to go back ill definitely be checking this museum out.

Amsterdam is also the home of the Hells Angels museum! I visited it circa 1988 when over there for the Assen TT races. Quite an eye opener it was too!

Amsterdam sometimes gets missed after cities like London, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Dublin. But it is a fabulous walking city -- just watch out for the assertive bicyclists and continual street cars. It's a city of canals and great old streets, cafes and street performers. The second largest Dutch city, Rotterdam, was bombed to the ground during WWII, but it is a treasure of modern architecture; I haven't been there yet.
