I remain a laggard as regard meer appreciation. The meers I crave are mostly unembellished, as in the echoes of traditional briar shapes such as those rendered by Dunhill. The embellishments of meer carvers are lost on me.

Now don't get excited. I'm saying only that this is my taste while fully allowing you yours.

The standard shapes are more plentiful as well.

Dunhill isn't above nonstandard shaping.

Since the central feature here is the carving, this is really a Meerschaum sculpture. So as a sculpture, is it worth $175K? As sable says, once you get down to the the figures, they are cartoonish, and the drama of the battle is not that well depicted, considering this as a work of art. I admire the extravagant expansion of pipe making as an art form, but I would bid way lower on this one, if I had substantial money and wanted it, which I don't. I think excellence in pipe carving is achieved through realization of an actual smoking pipe that sustains its use clearly in mind. This doesn't do that.

Ironically, the price makes me clench, which I could never do with this pipe, and which would be unsanitary to try with the muscles used in this case. Perhaps "pucker" is more appropriate.

I wish I could hear the thought processes of the buyer, as well as know the winning bid. With that much money, I'd go for a Picasso or Warhol, or something from the Renaissance, since I'd have to insure either purchase "up the wazoo." That war chest puts you in range of a lot of amazing work. Maybe not the prize pieces in the hundreds of millions, but still amazing. You might get a series of jiminks comic book cells! And they'd be a solid investment.

"Water's not working for you?"
No, man, it's like concrete. Thinking of sticking a stick of dynamite up my *ss and letting her rip."
"Well, maybe, but guys down at the tobacco shop say pipe smoke. Try that first."
