There's an old-fashioned usage you still occasionally hear in New England where calling someone (including oneself) ugly has nothing to do with appearance, but with unpleasant mood and attitude towards others. I think it is expressed quite well by the old phrase "The Ugly American."

It would be funnier if not a lot more truth than you might think.
