I was reading the thread on pipe cleaning earlier and had a rather amusing observation: I’m not very kind to my Peterson and Rossi pipes, lol. In fact, they are kinda treated like rented mules.

Generally I run a cleaner through the stem after each smoke and I don’t bash the rims against brick walls, etc., but almost all my other pipes get the bowl wiped out, the stem wiped with a cloth and usually a drop of mineral oil applied before going in the rack.

The Peterson and Rossi pipes get a pipe cleaner and set aside. No love, no polishing, no mineral oil, cake allowed to build, stems looking nasty. Poor pipes.

Funny thing is, I quite like both Peterson and Rossi and they continue to smoke great despite getting less attention.

Just made me chuckle.

I do this with all of my pipes. To me they are just tools that I use to smoke. Don't get me wrong, I don't abuse them or beat them up. And I do keep the rims clean.

Every once in awhile I may get bored and grab a few to do a more thorough cleaning, but after 2 or 3. I'm like whatever. I'd rather spend my time smoking them instead of baby-ing them.

Hmm... your pattern with the Peterson’s and Rossi’s..... seems like my general pattern for all my pipes..... they are doing their jobs well, apparently.

MAYBE the question you *should* be asking is “What is wrong with the other (lesser?) pipes that requires you to have to “baby” them?” ?

I take care of my artisan stuff, but I am always finding excuses to be less diligent about cleaning pipes. A small ding, or sometimes even less and I'm like, well, no need to deep clean that sucker every time, haha.

Reminds me of a good quote from a friend of mine. He bought a new car and a few weeks later we were driving it and a headlight went out. He calmly looked over and said "Well, I've got a headlight out. Might as well run this bitch into the ground." then accelerated rapidly.

As a new piper, I will always feel that it is best to care for everything you purchase. I am not saying baby them but taking the time to give it the proper attention goes a long way. No difference between a pipe and a car... treat them the best that I can.

What if someone on this forum admitted to purposely harming and endangering the well being of a pipe? Would they be cancelled? Would they be shamed?

Interested people want to know.
I don't think they would be. In the end, it's their money. I work hard for my money so when I use the little I have to get into a hobby like pipe smoking, I do the very best I can to not only care and appreciate what I have but also research and learn. I take piping as an art and lessons to be learned.

It's funny because I *think* I know what you mean and I'm the same way... Kinda like, you have "beater" pipes. You think 'meh, it's cheap/not special to me so I'll knock it around and not care as much if something happens to it'.
But in the end, because they're the ones you use more than your 'special' ones, you actually end up getting more attached to them haha. I had a Crown like that, the stem cracked and it tore me up inside even though it was only a 20 dollar bill.

I am certainly more careful with my artisan pipes and vintage Dunhills, etc.

Smooth pipes also seem to get gentler treatment.

Strangely, my Savinelli and Mastro de Paja, Stanwells and so forth are generally at the same price point or value, so it’s not like I’m ignoring the Petes due to price.

Mostly it’s like the other pipes are princesses and treated with more paternal care, while the Petes and Rossis are more like the second and third sons - quit whining and rub some dirt on it ya wee sprog; and don’t be breaking shit in the house, go outside and run around like lunatics dammit!

When I started smoking pipes, I thought I would clean less. But thought I would do deep cleaning every month or so. Nope. Found out cleaning right after the smoke is easier than doing deep cleaning. Beside, I drank my Everclear.

I rarely do not do a decent cleaning after a smoke with pipe cleaners and moonshine. When the pipe starts to taste like a wet dog smells it gets a ream and a brush treatment.
