Starting to Get Obsessed

I wanted to thank everyone that posted the cool pic's and ads, brought back a memeory for me that I had all but forgotten about, especially the European ads. When I was a kid living in Karlsruhe Germany, my mother used to send me down to the local tobacco shop on the corner to get her a pack of smokes, and it always took me hours to get home, (which pissed mom off) I was always stuck in the shop looking at all the cool ads and smelling the tobacco, and the owner was a real nice guy (pipe smoker) and would always buy me a coke and let me hang out. Looking at these ads, I was actually so taken back in time that I could smell the aroma of the shop and it made me smile.

My last souvenier that I had from the shop broke just a few months ago, I had a glass ashtray with the shop logo on it, that ashtray had to be 40 years old or better, it was a sad day.

Again Thanks, Yuri

yuri66 - that's a wonderful story, thanks for sharing. it is incredible how deep the memory goes yet just under the surface until triggered by a specific iconic image which is so powerful as to zap everything back in times past, evoking those feelings associated with the particularities of our evolving individual existences.

I'd love to have a hardcopy!
Too many copyright issues though, but Briar Book Press just might be able to pull it off, as they reprinted the old catalogs and stuff. It'd be great to have it all in order, if I had the skill I'd try to compile a pdf version that could be printed out, but I'm too much of a luddite and clumsy with 'puter stuff!
I was amazed at how many 3Nuns ads are out there, and I haven't found them all either! The old weekly magazines in England, like Punch especially, demanded a quantity of ads.
I wish there was a book covering the subject, that's one reason why I have endeavored to compile some kind of archive for easy access and available for anyone to browse through, I'm still working at it too!

Boy have times sure have changed. I was born in '77 so smoking ads were already banned from TV and radio when I grew up. The only time I would see a smoking advert was either in a magazine, on a bill board, in the store, and/or on race cars and dragsters (NASCAR & NHRA) etc. Heck, I remember when Camel cigarettes eliminated their Joe Camel campaign when I was a teenager as it was determined that it was appealing to "today's youth". Let me tell you, no Camel wearing a suit jacket and sun glasses ever made me want to smoke. Since Congress passed new laws in '09 (I believe) race cars can no longer advertise smoking products of any kind, and what was known as the Winston Cup for my entire life has since been changed to the Nextel Cup and now Sprint Cup. As someone that watched NASCAR a lot with my dad when I was younger; the name Winston Cup or Skoal tobacco on a race car never got me to smoke or chew.
Thanks for posting the vintage ads. They're always fun to look at.

I giggled like a school boy at these. Klompen-Kloggen sounds like something out of a Scandivanan smut film and not something I'd put in my pipe.
"Ah Herr Pipe-so-big! Is it true vat zey say about Klompen-Kloggen?"

"Ja ja, it is. I koult help joo packen joor... pipe."

Thanks for sharing all the pictures. Old advertising is a thing of the past since magazines and newspapers are losing subscribers quickly.

I am really digging this thread, lets keep going! Just a thought as well, if and when you post a photo, if you have the the approximate date of the ad / tin, post it, that would be fantastic!

Not a tobacco or pipe ad per se, but there's a pipe in it, that's got to count for something! Stumbled across this on the Social Security Administrations site while doing some research for a class a few weeks ago.
