I have always been in awe of the work of an artisan on just about any subject. I love watching the show, "How it is made." I just stumbled upon this video (about 13 minutes) of the making of a Tsuge pipe and just found it fascinating. I know it will be old hat to many of you, but I hope some enjoy watching.....

Cool, thank for posting the video.

She sure makes it look easy. They dont show the 88 things that can go wrong with every step

I do some staining. It was helpful to me to see her use the yellow as a second step followed by a third coat of redish brown. That makes a lot of sense to me. Ive tried messing with yellow and it is a very weird coating. Im going to have to try the three coat method.

Yes, she does. You have to respect all of the muscle memory in her hands to know by feel, weight, etc. when things are right. Even with the depth of the drill to make the holes.

I was perhaps most impressed with her sanding out the shape of the stem from that black, tubular blank. Amazing.
Your comments on the colors are interesting. I had not thought of what effect they would bring about.

I was not familiar with name but just googled her name. Is she the person on the video making the pipe???
She is indeed
Interesting that it is all “eyes and hands” work
I have 2 of her pipes

The top is a Tsuge Ikebana, and the bottom a limited edition.
The attention to detail in the limited edition is excellent (for a lower priced pipe)

pipe videos to us are kind of like videos of pretty ladies. Doesn't really matter if we've seen it before. That said the tin foil episode of how it's made is strangely relaxing and enjoyable.

Very beautiful pipes, Oz. I especially love the top one.
So cool that you know the actual maker of the pipe and that she was on that video.
I don't own a Tsuge, but I plan on changing that soon.

Well said, Bob..... We never tire of pretty ladies or pipes........

You're also spot on regarding the making of tin foil. A comfy chair.... a bowl of popcorn.... and the making of tin foil.... Man, that's the stuff of dreams, ha. :col:

oh we do tire of both, just not for very long.
The tin foil thing is weirdly meditative. I feel like that one sounds like the least interesting and boring one, but no it's just simple and joyful. Also it feels strangely wholesome.

I have a couple of Tsuges. Good smokers but I haven’t smoked them in years for no good reason. I need to correct that.
I feel like Brebbia, Tsuge, and Vauen don't get the love they deserve. All three make pipes that punch above their weight in my opinion. And the other brands I've smoked that deserve the same love, get the love they deserve all the time.

I'll second that, especially the Vauen.... I picked an estate Vauen at a pipe show about a year ago and from how it looked I figured someone would chase me down in the parking lot and say it was in that bin by mistake and I owed them more money... Got it home and cleaned it and it smokes even better than it looks. A top shelf pipe.

it's certainly at least on par with other similarly priced brands that get more attention. You know I don't think I've heard one complaint about that line from anyone either.
