I was told to get the 10 pack sampler and a MMCG to start. The CG really smokes well and is a fav. I am using the other's to try new things. Well worth the small investment. Have not tried the General one yet, I am scared of that one.

Like Rav and Foggy Mountain, I have a number of expensive briars and meers, but I really enjoy cobs. Some tobaccos, like burleys as many have said, taste better in a cob. And if somebody thinks I'm a red neck or a country boy, well, that's their judgmental problem. And some of them last for years. I have one cob from 1979, another from 1984, and I still smoke them on occasion. They can last if you take care of them.

Well, the Country Gentleman came in the mail the other day. Sat back and smoked a bowl of VaPer. Did it again not too long afterward. Only took a minute to like the goofy thing. I thank you all for talking me into getting a Cob pipe.

I'll gladly add my voice to the chorus. Cobs rock! I have a half dozen and just leave them in the garage/workshop. For outdoor and yard projects a cob works great. Most of the time though I reach for a briar but cobs most definitely have their place.

Lol cobguy. Yes, welcome and glad to have you. Word of warning though. PAD is not limited to briars. My cob collection now looks a lot like TopD's in the picture he posted above. Enjoy that Country Gent!

When I first saw the topic of this thread, and knowing the the intense devotion of the corncob set, I figured it would hit 50 posts at least.
Now it has...

If you can get past the appearance which is hard for some people as they have to look the part of a "pipe smoker" instead of just enjoying a pipe. Cobs are great for the fact that if you lose it or damage it you're only out a couple bucks. You can smoke any type of tobacco in it because it won't ghost like a briar pipe, and they are excellent smoking pipes; where as some briar pipes are not. Plus you don't really have to rest cobs, if you believe in that whole resting pipe theory. I have 8 cobs and I enjoy all of them just as I enjoy my briar pipes. They are great for someone starting out in the hobby or the experienced pipe smoker.

I've always liked cobs, and I've smoked them much more frequently since I started creating the Missouri Meerschaum pipe tobaccos, since I wanted the blends to taste best in corn cob pipes. A lot has been made of the modern school of pipe engineering with freer breathing airways. What has been lost on many folks is that corn cob pipes have been free-breathers for over 100 years. If you don't believe it, smoke an old briar and watch the opening of the stem after a puff. Do you see smoke curling out of the button? Probably not. Do the same with a cob and you'll see those wisps of smoke coming out the end.

I agree with Russ -- usually a very safe thing to do.
I am someone who ALMOST never smokes aromatics. But, when I do, I smoke them in a cob. First, no chance of ghosting any briars with the aro's flavors. Second, I am convinced cobs add sweetness. Lane 1Q in a cob? Even a confirmed old latakia, full English snob such as i has to say that's pretty tasty.

I wonder if it is a good idea reading all the post on this forum... With all the nice stuff I find, it is going to cost me lots of $$$. ;-)

Welcome to the ravages of TAD (Tobacco Acquisition Disorder) and PAD (Pipe Acquisition Disorder)...
The Pipe hobby has a way of making folks want to, as the Internets say it, "Buy all the things!"

Not much I can add that's not already been said except that there are always be a few smokers who will refuse to ever give a cob a shot, and that's ok. Their decision to stick with briar or a meet is ok with me. Not everyone can love them the way I do or so many on here but variety is the spice of life and we all have our favorites in pipes and tobaccos. Something certainly must be right about the lowly cob for it to have lasted so long.

I felt the same way as the OP until recently. I have NEVER owned a cob, nor did I have a burning desire to do so. My wife expressed interest in having one, so I bought one to put in her stocking for Christmas last year. It was only $8.00 US and was a MM. She smokes that thing all. The. Time. I've tried a few puffs a couple of times when she had it lit and I loved it. The flavor of the tobacco and the draw on the pipe were marvelous. I now have my mind set on a MM straight stem Mark Twain as well as a Huck Finn. Hopefully, she will put one in my stocking this year. :) Corn cobs are perfect for us because she is a Grad student and I am (finally) finishing up undergrad. Perfect gift for a perfect price. :puffy:

Yes, I am very glad I listened and got that Cob. Really enjoying it and must have smoked 5 bowls out of it today. Hate to give it a rest but I do rest my pipes.
