A Christmas Meer from my Anti-Smoking Parents

I take that compliment seriously, from one of the forum's resident meerschaum guys. I don't know much about meerschaum, so thank you!

Thank you! He had to be delivered at 32 weeks due to unexpected complications. He'll be in the NICU for at least 5 weeks, but his lungs are working well, and he's starting to keep some milk down via a feeding tube. The medical staff assures us that he's well on his way.
Things are complex for multiple reasons right now, but things seem ultimately hopeful.

I'm glad to hear the prognosis is positive and your son will be home soon turning your life upside down, in a good way. My twins were born early so I get what you are going through. Hang in there, we're thinking of you.

My son was born at 28 weeks and was in the NICU for what seemed like forever, but it was only 6-7 weeks, if he's breathing steadily and food is getting in that's a great sign, he'll get stronger and start growing fast. I'll pray for your baby (and his parents).

Yes, I'm thrilled that they thought to include the card! That should always stay with it.

Now, could you educate me on "fuming"? I've been a briar guy for 14 years or so, and know next to nothing about meer.

How is the fuming performed?
And is it primarily aesthetic (to aid in coloring, perhaps), or primarily functional (to harden the meer, perhaps)?
