A couple of months ago, my parents visited my brother who resides in Antalya, Turkey. As they were preparing to leave Wisconsin, they asked me whether there was anything I'd like for them to pick up for me whilst in Turkey. Of course I wanted to ask for a meerschaum by a local carver, but knowing their extreme opposition to my pipe smoking, I thought better of it (and asked for Turkish Delight instead).

On Christmas morning I was presented with a nifty blue box, and one of my daughters said, "Oh, maybe a pipe!" and I shot her a firm glance which meant, "Don't offend your grandparents."

But, lo-and-behold, she was right!

I looked quizzically at my parents, who quickly clarified that this was NOT to smoke, but only to add to my collection, for purely display purposes.

I winked and assured them that it will certainly be a welcome addition to my display.
(As for smoking it, I am happy for them to believe what they wish to believe...)

Here is a photo-of-a-photo which they took of the fellow's shop, which they describe as a tiny hole-in-the-wall about 10 minutes from my brother's residence:

And one of the neatest things is the carver's business card, which locates him simply "next to broken minaret" --

Due to a current medical situation, this will not be smoked for awhile. But boy is this an unexpected gift!

Another thing, which I'll just stick here since I'm not sure where else to stick it --

I just learned that a couple of gifts have arrived to my house from very kind forum members. I have not received these yet because I have not been home since this past Wednesday, due to our new baby being in a NICU a couple hours south of us (compounding my current medical situation!).

But I plan to swing back by home tomorrow -- Tuesday -- to tie up some loose ends, and I'll be able to receive those gifts at that time (and thank these members properly)!

I just don't want any members here feeling that their gifts are unappreciated. I simply haven't been home yet to open them! Thank you!

Beautiful pipe.
I hope it's nothing too serious with your new one and you will be able to bring your child home soon.
Thank you! He had to be delivered at 32 weeks due to unexpected complications. He'll be in the NICU for at least 5 weeks, but his lungs are working well, and he's starting to keep some milk down via a feeding tube. The medical staff assures us that he's well on his way.
Things are complex for multiple reasons right now, but things seem ultimately hopeful.
