A couple of months ago, my parents visited my brother who resides in Antalya, Turkey. As they were preparing to leave Wisconsin, they asked me whether there was anything I'd like for them to pick up for me whilst in Turkey. Of course I wanted to ask for a meerschaum by a local carver, but knowing their extreme opposition to my pipe smoking, I thought better of it (and asked for Turkish Delight instead).
On Christmas morning I was presented with a nifty blue box, and one of my daughters said, "Oh, maybe a pipe!" and I shot her a firm glance which meant, "Don't offend your grandparents."
But, lo-and-behold, she was right!
I looked quizzically at my parents, who quickly clarified that this was NOT to smoke, but only to add to my collection, for purely display purposes.
I winked and assured them that it will certainly be a welcome addition to my display.
(As for smoking it, I am happy for them to believe what they wish to believe...)
Here is a photo-of-a-photo which they took of the fellow's shop, which they describe as a tiny hole-in-the-wall about 10 minutes from my brother's residence:
And one of the neatest things is the carver's business card, which locates him simply "next to broken minaret" --
Due to a current medical situation, this will not be smoked for awhile. But boy is this an unexpected gift!
