I'm hoping to start doing some more serious cellaring this coming year myself. I've managed to assemble a pretty decent assortment at somewhere in the mid 40's lb range right now, but it's a lot of variety. This year I want to start focusing on developing some inventory of the blends that I really want to keep around long term. At this point I see a lot of GH&Co and SG purchases on the horizon.

Peck, congratulations on completing your cellar. I can only imagine what kind of crazy ride it has been to pull it together in just over a year. 600lbs is astonishing.
I did a little searching for a video homage to your cellaring efforts. What follows is an example of what might happen to me, if I were to embark on a journey of the magnitude you achieved.
Thanks to you and Harris for putting in an appearance at the end of the video.

Assuming you have 40 years of smoking left in your life...

= 15 pounds per year

= 240 ounces per year

assuming 10 bowls per ounce

= 2400 bowls per year

assuming 300 smoking days per year

= 8 bowls of tobacco per day for 40 years
There are some people who smoke that much, but I find that idea beyond the realm of reason for my particular lifestyle. But there are many lifestyles, and YMMV, truly. Wow. :)
Of course, if you really have as many decades as that ahead of you, you may wish to continually infuse blends of certain types, to enjoy not just aged tobacco, but vertical flights or A/B comparisons. I have found these to be very interesting, and worth doing. So don't necessarily count yourself done just yet!
All this assumes you are cellaring with the intent to smoke the tobacco. You may cellar to collect (sell, trade) later on as well. Many people do.
600 pounds is remarkable. A kid's college education, in tobacco form. :)

Good god! The amount and timeline of that is staggering. Although if I had $10k+ to spend on a cellar I totally would haha :worship:

Congratulations, Peck! But, um, I'm going to be shocked if you don't continue to add to your cellar over the coming months and years. New blends will come along. You'll doubt that you have enough of your favorites on-hand. And so on. Especially if you continue to hang out here; in my experience, this forum is expensive! ;)
I thought I was doing good with about 120 pounds in my own cellar (all tins). And for being a 52-year-old who smokes about 20-25 bowls a week, I'm probably in "okay" shape, tobacco-wise. (I have about 16-20 years' stock on-hand.) But that doesn't mean I don't keep itching to acquire!
Enjoy!

Thanks guys. No separate insurance - not sure how easy it would be to get a rider on my home policy for tobacco and pipes. Indeed, I'm not anxious for the insurance company to even know that someone smokes at my place.

I have contacted the folks at A&E about your disorder. They should be contacting you shortly to discuss a TV show.
Congrats Peck. This is great news for the rest of us. Maybe that will open up supply lines a bit...
+1

I think that would be worthy of the disorder program. Over 600 lbs amassed in under a year.
"He just won't stop buying tins. He is always going to tobacconist to buy more, or buying it off P&C while we are making love. He just won't stop buying. Look at him, he is probably sitting over there on his phone ordering from 4 noggins or Iwan Ries. There will be a box here in a couple days, he always has it sent 2-day, with over $300 worth of tobacco. Just you wait."

You guys are harsh, lol.
Ok, I am a bit compulsive.
Yeesh, I don't even want to discuss my wine collection.
Al, I think the most damming aspect of that pic is the second shelf - on the left where the Rattray tins are - because that shows you how deep those shelves are.
