A Bitter End... In Our Pipe Bowls?

If you can never smoke to the bottom of the bowl then you won't need any cake down there.
If it starts to taste like crap at the bottom, dump it out.
Many high quality blends taste amazing the further the bowl progresses. I haven't had this experience yet with an aromatic.
Aromatics need to be dried and smoked slow. One can argue that this is a universal rule, but it's so much more important when talking about aromatics.
Try a different pipe or two or three before you give up on a blend. Strange things happen in differnt pipes... Trust me.

Agree, the very bottom is the tar and really the filter of the smoke,

some pipeRs like/smoke until ash is in their mouths...I for one dump

the Dottle (bottom/tar and wet bacci) and move on to the next bowl
As for a meer, save up and get yourself a Storient Meer, top

jay, using a filter will in no way reduce the risk of smoking. All you are doing is robbing yourself of the true flavors of all the blends you are smoking. Do you think a filtered cigarette is healthier than a non filtered one?

Your website post was not breaking the forum rules since it was part of the convo and you are not affiliated with it. Also, the way I equate safety and filters for pipes is, it doesn't really make it safer unless your inhaling the stuff into your lungs, it is more like trying to make a gun safer with a silencer, it may slow down the bullet slightly, but in the end it still kills you. I seriously doubt it would have any real differince on wether or not you got cancer, if you like the flavor better without it, might as well enjoy it since your risking something valuable anyways. You will also want to ensure that the tobacco isn't too wet or dry, basically just feel it and if it seems real wet or goopy (mostly cheap aromatics) dry it out until it is not completely dry, but it is light and springy. If you pinch some in your hand and drop it, it should uncurl itself instead of staying in a solid glob. If it can't pinch together at all, it is too dry.
As for a Meershaum the only place you should go is Storient's site, he's a member here and has amazing customer service, his prices are also very low for the quality. just curious but when you stop smoking you probably have a glossy wet puddle at the bottom of the bowl, right? so when you go back to smoking it after it's had a rest, is all the glossiness gone? some kinds of tobacco blends will make for a lot more wetness and the pipe will need a lot more resting time as a result. i don't have any set schedule on when to rest a pipe. if it's glossy at the bottom it needs to be set aside; when it's not glossy anymore it can be smoked again.

Too many people worry too much about the almighty cake. Smoke your pipe down until the baccy starts to become unenjoyable, then dump it. The cake will take care of itself. Unless you are running you pipes too hot, all will be well mate. enjoy

most aero's could stand a little airing out time before loading up. when I'm down about 2/3 of the bowl and it won't take a quick relight it's time to dump and move on.

I agree BUT... you can take that damp baccy and put it on a plate for later (I do that to save some money plus it will contain more nicotine than the fresh stuff will. It's wise to recycle the baccy when you can and mix it with fresh stuff, still tastes great I think.

I general smoke 'on the go' in the car or in the evenings on the deck and just don't care to fool with 'recycling' tobacco. I'm not sold on the whole recycling thing myself. My buddy Sherlock always kept his in a slipper on the fireplace but he had the luxury of smoking inside.

Never had that issue but I dont smoke aromatics... as everyone has said, get rid of the filter.
Have you ever tried the palm rolling technique for packing your pipe? since I started using that years ago I have never had an issue with relighting a pipe, unless of course I set it down for a while.

Well I was taught about 12 years ago from some old guy at a pipe show in Richmond, VA. ... I will see if I can find something on youtube or some other link.
in the meantime just place a pile on the palm of your hand and you take the pipe and place the bowl over the tobacco and begin swirling it... it basically loads itself in a spiral fashion and retains the light due to the nature of the swirling or some shit like that... bottom line it is by far the BEST method that I have used on my 20 years of smoking... has never failed me, in fact from the very first time it's worked.
I'll see what I can find.
