The folks at Scandinavian Tobacco Group, or their computer anyway, sent me a birthday coupon, though my birthday is months in the past. It's for $3 off on any of several pouches of their tobacco, which seem to be limited to Half-and-Half, Captain Black Dark, Paladin, Velvet, Borkum Riff Mixture, and Sir Walter Raleigh Regular. Being a thrifty chap, I do dote on coupons even if I'm not a regular user of a particular blend. I think among these, Velvet would be my choice. But here's the rub. My local pipe shop doesn't carry many or any pouches. Likewise, groceries, drugstores, and convenience stores don't either. And there's no code to use these online. I might log some miles searching for a gas station, but that would burn up my three bucks, and the likelihood they'd have Velvet is beyond remote. So I'm three dollars richer in my mind, but probably no bargain pouch for me. I puzzle over what the marketing department at STG was thinking. What do you suppose? In 1962, I could have cashed this coupon at any grocery store for most any of the blends.
