I find that, with certain tobaccos, a large-bowled pipe gives me more flavor. To wit, I have an estate saddle-bit, Grade A Upshall FH ExL billiard whose bowl measures one inch wide by two inches deep (it's a pipe worth of Forums member tbradsim :)). Charged with my beloved Edgeworth Ready-Rubbed I get from it more of that tobacco's molasses flavor than from any other pipe I own. Of course, due to its prodigious size, I have to be able to settle in for a long smoke, but it works for me!

At this juncture I do not like wide bowls. That said, I dont smoke any uber strong blends. My limit is 22mm and smaller. Any more and the taste just gets too airy for me.

Also I like a fresh pipe. As the tobacco below gets filled with gunk and ash it doesnt taste as good to me as the top 2/3 of the pipe. Id rather load 2 small pipes than 1 big one. It also gives me the opportunity to pick a different bend.

Lastly, I just cant sit around more than an hour smoking. I guess its the ADHD...after that much time Im ready to do something else :)

I also like big bowled pipes.
In fact just recently I bought a Peterson 315XL. My first thought was, "THIS is XL? I'd hate to see their XS!"
I have a Charatans Make Outsized pipe that truly is a big bowled pipe.
Last summer I folded and packed 5 flakes of PS LNF in it. :)
After 3.5 hours it was half gone, but I needed to put it down for awhile. Not due to nicotene, but just fatigue.
I have a Meerschaum Calabash shaped pipe that is even bigger. A full bowl of ribbon in that takes 2-2.5 hours. Ive never tried flake in it.
This pipe is so deep I need an extendo lighter to reach the bottom.1000004895.jpg

Great taste in pipes with the Upshall FH Ext. billiard. I have a Hardcastle billiard that makes for a long smoke. Most of my Freehands hold a lot of tobacco too. I also agree that Edgeworth Ready Rubbed was a wonderful blend. In fact, I had a bowl this morning.

I can really second that! No matter how hard I try to smoke slow and cool, the bottom 1/3 of the bowl always tastes nothing like the top 2/3. The bottom tastes ashy to me. Probably the combustion byproducts accumulate there. Maybe the moisture, idk

The only blend I have successfully enjoyed from top to bottom of the bowl was Orcilla by Robert Lewis (a standard 20x40 bowl).
