To quote Sherlock Holmes, “you know my methods” so I’ll spare you all the pictures of stuff chucked up in a lathe, files, and sandpaper and just post a few and cut to the chase. I used a premolded P-Lip stem and cut a rather large aluminum spigot to get this kalmach smoking again. I’m still making a Weichsel stem for it but I’ve got the cherry that @Briar Tuck was kind enough to send me curing in the garage while I gather the rest of the materials. So without further rambling. Very nice, and personally, I like all of the pics of sandpaper and stuff, ha ha. But, I'm a nerd like that.

The angle of the cone for the spigot... it may just be the pictures, but it looks a little steep to me. I assume it holds ok in the pipe, right? Like I said, it may just be the picture.

When I make them, mine are less steep in the angle. I don't have a good way to get an accurate measurement, but I use a mandrel that I turned down myself. Where mine goes into the stummel, I then flair the metal and stem out a little for the look.

Anyways, it looks like you're making something for yourself to enjoy. Same for me. I love doing these spigots.

I hope the pipe gives you years of enjoyment.

It’s a smoking case, so you can smoke the pipe without touching it, you know for coloring. 😉

Good eye, it is VERY steep. But you have to realize that this pipe was originally designed to have very long cherry stem with a cork on the end and a vulcanite mouth piece. So I had to cut the spigot to fit the existing mortise. It’s very shallow and has no sump. I cut the spigot to get as much contact as I could, but I still wouldn’t walk around clenching this monster. Normally I would cut a spigot and them ream the mortise to fit it but it’s so shallow I couldn’t do that on this one. The spigot still sits right on top of the draft hole.

The leather case is interesting
I have seen a few of them.
I wonder if it is to aid or to retard colourisation ?

Not sure how much your pipe has been smoked, but the bowl looks hardly coloured

Zat a Duke? Wonder how many velvet coupons you had to send off for that one?🤔 Well I feel like worked way too hard on mine now, I got a whole tub full of old stems. I could have just turned an adapter for one of those…😂

As I understand it, the case was so you could smoke/color the pipe without touching it. Touching a meerschaum you were coloring was believed to make em splotchy. You know, white smoking gloves and that nonsense. And no this one doesn’t appear to have been smoked a great deal.

Yes i agree, Nice work, but wierd case. I'd Have a regular meer case made for it! Or make something yourself, you seem handy enough!

In the 19th century it was common practice to sew a meerschaum pipe into a chamois pouch in an effort to accelerate coloring, the smoking case was the next logical step in convenience. This way you could open up the case without touching the pipe to check on the progress of coloring. These unadorned Kalmachs were sold/marketed solely for coloring. It was a gentlemanly pursuit. The case is the only reason I bought this pipe. It’s a C.P.F. (Colossus Pipe Factory) the predecessor to KB&B and Kaywoodie. They were known for high quality meerschaums. Without the case it’s just another unmarked old meerschaum.

I quite like the case. Nice job with the stem, too.

Are you still searching for a suitable piece of cherry to use?
