That was a very, very helpful post. Thank you so very much. Now I can take pictures at full resolution and upload them here. My apologies about the first 3 being sideways I will have to flip the raws.

I think I got the route for the pictures. It took me quite awhile and had to do one at a time. Will try to do better next time, Hoppes

Yes. The "O" stamping is attributed to Orlik made pipes. Further, shape #258 is listed as small apple, which seems to match what you have.

It smokes like a dream. Very happy with it. This thread encouraged me to try out this estate pipe and I am glad I did. I would personally call it a prince but tomato tamato;)
I really enjoyed reading the histkry from the knowledgeable members. What a great thread and even greater forum.

It's one of those areas where a small bend makes a big difference
Looks to be a great shape no matter what you wanna call it. Prince, pauper, pomme...the noble pipe will rise above appellation when leaf meets flame revealing it's nature and character. :puffpipe:

I agree. The shortened apples top, short shank and long bit lean to prince, though I am accustomed to seeing a bend in the stem. After looking around it is not uncommon to find them with a straight tenon also.
Bewlay shape chart has tge 258 as a prince https://www.google.com&s/rebornpipes.com/2014/03/07/house-of-bewlay-pipes-tobacco-leaflets& though, concedingly, the one pictured shows a bent bit.

Here's a 1917 Bewlay Olde 49.. No other nomenclature so the actual maker would probably be conjecture. Didn't come with the original stem unfortunately BUT the mortise is threaded.
Does that indicate the original was perhaps Amber with a threaded tenon?

Were vulcanite stems ever threaded in such a way?

Were Barlings of this antiquity commonly threaded?

Hi Brian,
To answer your question, both vulcanite and amber stems were commonly threaded, using a threaded bone tenon, during the 19th and early 20th centuries. By 1917, the practice would have been dying out, though I've seen pipes with hallmarks as late as the early 1920's that still used a bone screw-in tenon. By 1917, Barling was using friction tenons, so this is not a Barling. As early as 1912, and more likely earlier, Barling was using a combination of a vulcanite friction tenon attached to their amber stems for mounting, so the thread would not be an indicator of a Barling origin in any way.

Brian, I'm wondering if the stem had a Sterling fitment to screw into what your picture shows. What are the hallmarks on the part of the pipe you have?

Thanks for the insight Jesse.
Dmcmtk, the threads are cut into the briar itself and id think metal to wood screwing would be frowned upon but..
The hallmark shows just B&CO, and the b/lion/leopard head.

So Barling is out. It's technically pre-Saseini by about 2 years. Doesn't necessarily LOOK Charatan in the contemporary sense. Maybe Loewe.. Will probably never know for sure.
