9th Homemade Natural Billiard

Sometimes a block of briar turns into a door stop or kindling.... After a failed attempt where I accidentally carved the shank too thin, I did fair better on the next attempt. Just experiential proof why starting on cheaper blocks is a good idea when learning to carve pipes. That could have been a $60 scrap chunk for testing stains....
Here is my 9th pipe - R9 a natural finish billiard.
I wanted to go with a traditional shape after some non-traditionals.
For some reason the top picture makes the bowl appear asymmetrical, elongated at the forward top end, but its actually symmetrical. perhaps lighting, angle, or using a cell phone camera...

Haha, its actually been in the 20s-30s outside so about 30s to low 40s in my garage since I work while smoking a pipe with the garage door open. Just bundle up in lots of layers, wear a hat, and light up a pipe!

Not a chance Josh, I HATE the cold and hide out in the cave until it warms up. In fact I only leave the house for my monthly doctor appointment. When spring comes I'm working on building things, swimming in the pool, working on the tan and the yard. I was crushed in a car in '79 and broke my back and pelvis, now as the years have gone by the arthritis gets worse and it’s hard to stand and move around a lot. I would rather it be an enjoyable event, rather than a painful one
But I did get a package today of 6 used estate pipes from Ebay ($25). Don’t think there’s anything special but 3 worth looking up. But gives be something to work/learn on, going to sand one down and refinish, and all need stem work.

Craig, that makes sense! Actually estates are a great way to start. Before I ever carved my first pipe, I restored a few estates. That gave me the courage to try carving as restoration taught me a good deal about finishing, polishing, staining, and minor working and sanding. Its a good place to start!
