I did an experiment and I must admit that the result was impressive... I smoked several bowls of G&H Black Bogie Twist and Dark Plug with white elephant 6mm meers filters placed in some of my 9mm pipes... no bites, very improved airflow as direct result of the reduced diameter of the filter, dry smoke... I'm curious if anyone has tried this setting...

Next experiment will be to smoke with 6mm charcoal filters placed in 9mm pipes... as soon as I'll get some... more to follow.

I have not tried a smaller filter but its an interesting idea.
However, I wonder if all you are getting is the result of flow around on the paper filtration. With very little snugness is much being pulled through?

That’s hard to determine. Perhaps tape off the end of the filter intake side and see if it smokes the same. Or better yet, empty one and replace the cap. With it see if it tastes and feels the same. If so the filter medium isnt doing much and paper filters can be hand rolled and almost free of charge.

I tried to remove the blue plastic cap of those old 9mm Dr.Pearl - I bought 70 of them sigh - of course with bent pipes... the airflow was better but sometimes some charcoal pellet got out of the filter and clogged the stem so I trashed them and moved on...

Usually the G&H Ropes and Plugs doesn't bite without the filters but they smokes very wet - at least for me - and the 9mm filters catch too much nicotine so the 6mm filters worked great in my 9mm pipes... improved airflow and overall maximized the perceived strength...

My experience so far is that mixtures that doesn't bite taste better with meers filters so I use charcoal filters mostly with blends that contains bright Virginias - eg. Capstan etc. - that usually bite me...

Today I received some supermix - charcoal and meers - white elephant 9mm filters, may be interesting if they give the best of both experiences... I'll try them and report back.

I hate those old blue cap vauens. They are resistant.

Just for interests cut a piece of paper and roll yourself a paper filter and see what you think.
Printer paper works, a little heavier (no gloss) paper is better.
