Can you fine folks think of any independent carvers doing 6mm filtered pipes? While I like the Italian factories, they all have the same narrow drafthole drilling. Which I hate.
As an aside, I think one of the reasons that MM cobs smoke so well is that they have a very wide draft which helps any condensation dissipate before the pipe can get gurgly.
Any ideas? For carvers looking at this, I'm pretty sure you could mint your own coin if you figured out a way to combine the lockup of Vauen's filtered pipes with a wide draft and whatever your artistic vision is.

Do you want to use the filter or do you just want a more open airway? If the latter, I would think you could just request that the carver drill it to your specifications.

I like that size filter for aromatics and Virginia-heavy blends, which is about half of my smoking.

Not to mention Dr. Grabow and Medico! Given how many those companies sell in the US, one would think that a market for artisan pipes - maybe in the $200 range - would exist somewhere.

I know there are a few rather new artisan carvers in the YouTube pipe community that make 9mm pipes. However, I know nothing of their quality so I do cannot recommend anyone.

I started making all of my own 6mm filter pipes about 2 years ago because that's all I smoke and many people like the 9mm. What are you looking for? I've been looking for test subjects lately....free pipe in return for constructive feedback.

Here's the last I made several weeks ago, 6mm Lovat.

Thanks! It smokes good and I'd been wanting a Lovat for a while.
Looks terrific! Your pipe is pretty much exactly what I'm into.
Very loosely, what I'm looking for: In straight pipes I really like craggy sandblasts, pot shapes, good stretch of shank, and a saddle bit; i.e., Canadian, Liverpool, Lumberman, Lovat, what have you. In bent pipes I like a Dublin bowl with a straight vertical, not canted, orientation (though I do have a paneled Medico Zulu that smokes like a dream). I would like the interior of the stem drilled deep enough to accommodate Savinelli's filters as well as Dr. Grabow and Medico paper filters. A lot of the mods I've seen, especially cobs, have shortened shanks that only fit Savinelli's balsa filters. Which is fine, I like those, but I like to have the option of using whatever filter I have near to hand.
That said, I proudly walk the world with some of Creation's ugliest pipes hanging from my jaw because they smoke so well. Pipes that, if they were girls in the dating world, would aptly be described as having great personalities.

it's been a bit since I took measurements, and I've since lost my box of Medico filters I had since I don't use them, but if I recall the measurements are quite a bit different. The 6mm balsa filter I actually drill out to 6.5mm for a proper fit and I believe the Medico was much closer to 6mm which left a lot of play that I didn't care for at that diameter.

I haven't taken any actual measurements from their new Charcoal style or any other brands/styles but I probably should to see how much variance all of the different manufacturers have.
