This month is 60 years of pipesmoking for me. Unfortunately the number will end here. I have just this week been forced to quit because of blood pressure problems. Well, maybe a pipe once in a great while. Have any of you survived more than 60 years of it?

61 years. Smoking pipe is part of my blood pressure control along with beta blockers and ace inhibitors and diuretics and diet. Shel

Bruce remember I told you You Don't Need NonStinking Driving License. Well you can smoke every other day, if that don't work, every 3 days, you may have to pace yourself and smoke once a week, better than not at all. Oh see another Dr, new eyes, new melds.

foggymountain, I hope you get your BP down and can manage at least a weekly bowl. Better keep tabs on us newcomers with only forty or fifty years of pipes. I always look for your posts.

foggy, have you tried a cocktail of Metopolol succ er 50mg once a day and 20 mg lisinopril twice a day? If not tell your doctor you want on it and then see if you blood pressure is not under control. Even still, do you really give a shit about living a few extra months or being happy smoking your pipes?

I have blood pressure problems and I haven't had more than three bowls a month lately.

As time passes it seems that my blood pressure is more directly tied to my level of exercise. Last month I tried hiking 6 miles a week (in February that means snowshoes) for a few weeks and it knocked 20 points off the high end, but then I got lazy again and it's back up.

Sweet and sour news, Foggy. You've made it this far and have to stop. Thanks for all of the input you've given us in the community, on art, Dunhills, tobacco. You're wisdom has fueled us. Even back when someone left you that anonymous note on your apartment door. I hope that even if not smoking, that you'll continue to join us here, and influence the other generations.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Harris: I am on both drugs you mention, and several others, all at maximum amounts. I do 17 blood pressure pills a day. It has finally reached the point when taking another pill will not help.

Bradley: Still following your advice about driving, but it is way past the point where another doctor will do it. Besides, I really like my female MD. She is HOT, the kind of woman who when young, would stop traffic. Miss America wishes she were as good looking as my doctor was in her younger years. And because of personal connections, she treats me as one of her family.

I had a heart attack 3 years ago. Picked up y he pipe to quit cigarettes. When smoking only my pipe my blood presume is perfect like 110 over 75. I work physical though and have meds that do something. We all have to make hard choices for love of others like sticking around for family. My best wishes.

A bowl a week can be a wonderful gift. I hope you beat these health challenges -- and, of course, keep posting here.

Wish I had the quote at hand, but Bernard Baruch said something about the advantage of getting older was that eventually women of any age look good to you. But the actual quote has a lot more pizzazz.

MSO: What you said about women is true. And they are getting better looking. Probably natural selection.
It has to be made clear: nicotine raises your blood pressure. Some of you seem to think it lowers it. Do not fool yourselves. If your pressure is naturally low, no problem. If it is high, there is a problem.
