About 5 weeks ago I was smoking a cigar, and started to get sharp pains in my heart. So I put down the cigar and they stopped. I haven't smoked any tobacco since. What is it like? The physical addiction is nothing compared to cigarettes. It was fairly easy to quit. There is one thing though. Sometimes I feel a little jittery or out of sorts. Previously I would light a pipe. No More. That is when I miss it. When things were not quite right, I would have a smoke. The smoke solved the problem. Yes I do miss it, but my life is not destroyed. I will save a few dozen pipes and plenty of tobacco so I can change my mind 10-12 years from now, if I feel like it, in case I am in this body that far in the future. I do still have hundreds of cans of aged tobacco and over 100 pipes, if anyone wants to buy some. I listed some of the pipes on the appropriate forum on this site earlier today.

Here's hoping you are healthy enough to smoke if you want in the future, I certainly don't get the cravings for tobacco like I did with cigarettes. Perhaps you can find something else to take it's place for those jittery moments.

foggymountain,
I'm curious if you ever had a doctor give you and opinion on this. I think if I experienced something like a pain in the chest at anytime I'd ask my doctor about it at my yearly physical... or sooner. Of course you are doing the wise thing by stopping smoking, but wouldn't you like to have the peace of mind of a medical okay? Maybe you have, in which case you can disregard my inquiry =)

Once in a while, not that often, I will have a whole day go by before I realize I haven't had a smoke all day, and I didn't miss it at all. Cool...

foggy', I think you seemed to have tapered off before the cigar smoking incident, so you gave it every opportunity through moderation. No point in pushing your luck, though. Moderation was a good first step. You may find a passable substitute or two for pipes, nothing inhaled, injected, nor ingested. Something to provide some solace. Thank you for offering pipes and blends for sale, better than most pipe shops by far, screened by an expert.

Foggymountain, here's to your health.
Death metal is really good for the heart, I'm told (by experts in their field, and I wasn't drunk, honest).

Bruce, I hadn't heard the whole story, I hope you are feeling better now. It sucks getting older and happens way to fast, but it is better than the alternative as they say. I agree with Tuold, I hope you have been checked out. Maybe it was nothing but better to be on the safe side. Find something else that calms you when you are jittery, maybe meditation?

Foggy', not currently smoking pipes is not a reason not to stay in touch on Forums. You are a master of the art, so have plenty to share from years of experience. Give us a shout, and advice, information, opinions and historical insights as you think needed. Especially now that many are smoking your pipes and blends. Guide them on their way.

Apparently you made a right choice and discovered whom the "master" of the habit was. I gave up on cigs in my twenties due to a sore throat the would not cease until I stopped. Was smoke free for 30 years until recently taking up the pipe. A very much different experience. I can go all day without a single craving, despite my smoking/vaping associates whom need to frequent the back lot, (they are not the masters of their own habit). In fact when I go for a walk, I don't even bring the pipe along. I enjoy the fresh air.
To me, smoking a pipe is a genuine recreation, on a well deserved break at the end of the day. It's a ritual whose convenience is dependent upon one having the time to engage in it. So I believe you when you say it was not a hard thing to do.
