For those prices you can't go too wrong with some basket pipes.
The only one I really recognize is the top right one. It's Dr. Grabow and is most likely a decent smoker.
Offer them $40 for the lot and see if they'll take it! :puffy:

I like the two with the green tags. Top one looks like a Kaywoodie. Maybe a shape 14.
Don't know what the bottom one is, but it looks like a quality pipe in good condition.
The middle one of the three looks like a decent pipe for $10 too. It just isn't a style I like.
Top left one looks like it has the wrong stem. Bottom left doesn't look like anything special. I'd like to know what the stamps are though.

That "spade" shape stamp on the stem is pretty indicative of a Dr. Grabow:

Off hand, I think, after inspecting them closely and handling them all, I'd buy the best two. Just visually, that might be the two green tag pipes, but seeing them in person might give a different impression. Twenty bucks is reasonable, and you will probably end up with some good smokers. These are better than selections I've seen. Saw a group of ten or a dozen freehands at an antique store in NY State, and none of them were remotely tempting. Run pipe cleaners through them; inspect the inside of the bowls for burnt spots, and the shanks for cracks. You could test the seller on the price, two for $15, but $20's not bad.

Looks like a clover to me
Yeah ... I guess it's too close to call.

However, I have a couple of Dr. Grabows in that shape.
In fact, I even rusticated one of them:

Just as a matter of curiosity I'd choose the pipe on the top left. The shape is out of the ordinary and stylistically looks like it might be the oldest. I'm thinking more as a collector though, than a smoker.

I have 2 pipes. A MM cob and a free pipe with the purchase of some tobacco from pipesandcigars type briar. They are literally a few blocks from my house at a store apparently. I will go look at them Saturday. They said that they would work on me with the price a little if I bought them all. I might offer them $40 for all 5 of them if none of them are in horrible shape.
I guess I need to read up on estate pipes.
In either case, I will certainly have pictures and comments on them Saturday. They open at 9 and I will be there early I'd guess.:)

I'm the one suggesting you buy two. Pipes tend to accumulate, and you learn more about buying selectively as time goes on. That's the argument for not buy whole groups of pipes at once. For this batch, two may turn out to be plenty, since you may buy at least four or five more in the next six months. Just my suggestion.

Heh.
I bought a ten dollar pipe once, at a head shop (for lack of a local tobacconist) and it turned out to be made of some weird press board wood by-product that literally began disintegrating into sawdust on the 10th or so smoke.
I figure any ten dollar pipe that's actually made out of wood, instead of wood by-product is worth taking a chance on!
P.S. I'm 99% certain that the spade is, in fact, a spade.

I kind of feel that for $10 a piece, they can at least give me the satisfaction of having a meager collection until I start buying nice ones.:) They don't seem abused in the picture at least. I could always sell them on ebay or give them away in the future to get people to start smoking a pipe if they are smokable.
I just said I would start trying to get people to smoke. Peer Pressure.:)

There is actually 2 Dr Grabow pipes in the lot and I like the look of one. There was also 2 MM cobs. I figured I might as well off $40 for the 7 of them instead of $30 for the 3 I wanted. Never know when I might need the parts to fix another pipe in the future. :) An addiction is born. Even if I don't smoke them, I will never pass up a pipe at a yard sale or auction again.

This one actually has a dark mother of pearl mount. It isn't real(vulcanite?), but I like the look of it. No markings of any sort that I see while looking at it under a flashlight. The hole looks right, it doesn't seem to be burned at the top as much as tarred, but it isn't likely a collectors item. I was going to get this one anyway. I figure it will be smokable. I like the wood of the bowl - it has like a peacock feather look to it. The hole is drilled straight and in the right place. It is shimmed at the tenon.

MM Cobs. Used, but probably still usable. I will clean them up and offer them as loaner pipes. They were thrown in with the deal.

I like the design of this one. It was used to smoke something that was not tobacco a few times by my estimation. The finish is bubbling off. It was some gouges. The stem isn't right. I figure I could use it to practice restoration. It is labeled CHABOT with the C being big and the habot written in it. It doesn't appear to have been smoked with anything very much but I'm not an expert.

This one is probably in the best shape. It is marked ITALY. I like that it is fully bent.

This was actually a DR Grabow with Meerschaum liner. The tenon is made of metal and is loose. It is in pretty good shape aside from a leaf shaped scratch on one side that I can at least try to darken up so it isn't as obvious.

The last one actually says "Special collaboration of Dunhill and Peterson" on it. ;) Kidding of course. It has a spade and says Dr Grabow.
Overall, I got some pipes to tinker with and a couple that should be decent smokers.
