Anyway, point of this little digression was that just before Thanksgiving I was asked by one of the clients staff "How do you celebrate Thanksgiving in England" which just seemed an unlikely question given the history of the Pilgrim Fathers. Quick as a flash I told her that on the 5th November (aka Guy Fawkes Night) we burnt an effigy of a Pilgrim Father as a warning not to come back.
Good Shit!!!...

Is there any sort of English equivalent to Thanksgiving
My brothers (all quite a bit older than me) used to recall 'Empire Day' (later renamed 'Commonwealth Day' due to not having an Empire) being some cause for celebration when they were at school but it never featured in my life. In respect of the family get together with turkey dinner etc. then Christmas would be the obvious nearest thing. Of course, in England (and here in Australia ) the day after Christmas 'Boxing Day' is also a holiday too.
But something like Thanksgiving? Nope.
