A pipe came in the mail today and my wife was moved to count up my pipes -- 46. I suspect a dozen

pipes are more than enough for a good rotation. Twenty-four is a gracious plenty. No one needs thirty.

Of course, I know people who scaled down from two hundred to sixty. It can be a more than a little

obsessive compulsive, and I'd like to do more shopping on my pipe rack than online. I'll have to practice

that. This one's a Vuillard, a subsidy now of Chocum, an apple Group 4 with tapered Cumberland stem,

faux horn godet and olive wood cap. It was half price. Puff-puff.

This thread is great ammunition for those of us who are short of the 46 mark. Thanks for setting the bar. That means I can buy an additional 18 pipes.

I've been desperately trying to keep my rotation around 40 pipes, but it keeps creeping forward....

Cleaning that amount really is a chore and I find some just don't get smoked that often.

Usually after adding a few, I'll also purge a few, it's my natural order I guess.

46 is about the number I have at the moment. I've decided to slow down when I hit the 50 mark. Notice I said "slow down", not stop! Enough is when you can't afford to buy more, or you run out of room! My wife may not like the fact that I have several thousand dollars worth of pipes on my racks, but she's never tried to stop me! I don't try to keep her from buying books (she has WAY more invested in books than I do in my pipes), and she doesn't keep me from buying pipes! Although, my pipes, tobacco, guns, and ammo all together probably equal or surpass the amount she has tied up in her books, so I guess we're even.

I'm topping out at around 25, and will sell some before I get any more. I don't smoke a huge amount and having pipes that I don't have an active relationship with seems unseemly to me. I'm a smoker, not a collector.
No judgement of those of you who have squillions of pipes. Go for it. It's just not for me.

I have seven pipes, six of which I actively smoke. I don't think I could pick out 40 pipes that I actually liked, let alone come up with the money for them. But I do have a Falcon on the way ... so that will make it eight pipes. If I extrapolate, eight pipes over six months - that is 16 a year, 160 a decade ... so thaaaaats how it happens.

I have more than a dozen pipes now. So any more pipes I buy will be to replace those not used regularly.

I guess I'm PAD deficient. I only buy one or two pipes a year. I just don't have room for any more.
I do try to make up for it by buying more tobacco than I can comfortably store in my restricted space.
