The one thing that makes me uneasy about this brand is many reviews say you absolutely do not get the pictured pipe.
They show beautiful straight grain in the picture, but you get...um....something else.
They obviously show the finest specimen, or an AI version of what it COULD be.
Other than that, people say they smoke great for the price.

I was concerned with this as well. Recently bought one out of curiosity. The listing had an "or best offer" option, so i sent a significantly knocked down offer and he accepted.

This was the ad pic (*note green stem):

And this is what i got (*note red stem):

Muxiang Old Fred.JPG

It smokes great, clenches well and overall is a well-made piece. If anything, i like the grain on the one i got better than the pic and the stem color was a plus in my book as well, since i've already got a Bonfiglioli with a green stem. But the point remains: there are variables, so for those that are particular - certainly something to consider.

Is there a way to tell if they are real briar?

My best friend Johnny got his license in November 1973 and that meant, we could get Jack Baker’s coon dogs and go coon hunting. We took along Wayne Baker (Jack’s 14 year old son and off we went to Spout Spring Hollow, with a crusted snow on the ground.

We built a fire on the hill, and we could see the lights of Dunnegan and Humansville and Collins, and we thought we could see Flemington, while a billion stars shone overhead.

All of a sudden, a bear growled really loud, about a couple hundred yards off, and Jack’s dogs went howling and snarling and barking after it.

And then we heard an awful commotion and that bear, or whatever it was, whipped a pack of coon hounds and they all came back to us, whimpering and whining, wanting no part of that bear.

I had my Daddy’s rifle, a Model 67 Winchester .22 single shot, and it felt comforting to me the three quarters of a mile we trudged through that crusted snow. If it was today the bear would just have ate me, I suppose. It was the hardest waking I’ve ever done.

I was raised up in the Humansville Christian Church and I just don’t know how, to intentionally cold blooded lie to somebody. But the other boys doubted if me, Johnny and Wayne actually heard a bear in Spout Spring Hollow.

So we asked the local sage of all wisdom Alva Rains about it, and Alva said that damned old Roosevelt and the game wardens turned loose a large number of black bears before the Second War and that he’d both seen and heard bears.

And what Alva said about bears applies to briar.

Hon, there ain’t nothing in the timber that sounds like a bear, except a bear.:)

This, is briar—-look at it.

My Chinese pipe must have been on a slow jetliner but it finally has arrived.

That’s not varnish, but wax.

It’s pre carboned.

This thing is among my very best grained pipes. It’s way better than I expected.

If you want, there’s a 9mm filter inside a lucite stem that’s a perfect counterfeit of vulcanite.

Wow. The Chinese have learned how to make true luxury grade pipes for $43 and up.

You might as well kiss the competitors goodbye.

You Wouldn’t Cross the Street to Say Goodbye

After maybe a dozen smokes this pipe is coloring well. These are fantastic bargains. There really are none any better at any price you can buy new. You can buy fancier, but no better.
