I’ve been into pipes for a short amount of time, but in this time I have gotten a chance to examine several pipes and smoke quit a few as well.

Although I’ll always love a Peterson pipe, and think that for me outside of a Castello or Dunhill they are the nicest “production pipes out there”.

But when it comes to artisan pipes, Sean Reum of Reum Pipes, Ryan McCawley of Smokin Barrel Briars and Paul Lucas of Paw pipes are “for me”.

Those three have a very distinct style with outside the box color combos and stem work that I am consistently blown away by. At this point, I am not sure I will venture outside of the theee artisans as they just hit the spot for me. Not only are the pipes absolutely beautiful, they smoke so smooth.

Those guys are my favorite, what say you? Have any of you owned pipes by these guys? What’s your thoughts?

If you have specific artisans that really speak to you, who are they and what specifically do you like about them?!

I think my favorite production pipes over the years have been Stanwell. I've had many, still have a few and this Nanna Ivarsson design especially still does it for me:

Favorite artisans (that i own) would be Ahmet Govem for his concept implementation with commission work:

Fikri Baki for elegance of design:

Bear's Den Briar for his attention to detail, again, in commission work:

And Rad Davis for detail, design and blast:

When it comes to artisanal pipes I want a pipe that smokes very well, and an imaginative personal style that is instantly recognizable, not imitative. Here are examples from three artisan carvers I really like.

Lee Von Erck

His pipe smoke exquisitely well for me and his styling is very individual.

Expertly made pipes that look like no one else's.

Scottie Piersel
Her pipes are unique, with pencil shanks that are reinforced with a surgical steel lining, reverse tenon leading into the stem for an un interrupted airway from the chamber to the slot. This is the first of several pipes I commissioned from her. All of the pipes I've bought from her are exceptional smokers.

OK, I lied, here's one from Trever Talbert, a witches caldron with "cinders" in the stem.

I've noticed that unlike other factory pipe manufacturers, Peterson hasn't altered their shapes for many years.
They have added a few. Particularly pleasing to me was the 2024 POTY.
And I read, via someone's recent trip to the factory, that they have 2 new shapes in the works at the moment.
I'll be looking to see what they are....
