This is my second pipe. It is a small volcano made from a medium piece of grade 3 briar. There are a number of pits/flaws that were impossible to sand out. I didn't want to rusticate it and since no one will ever smoke or gaze at it but me, I decided to finish it smooth and live with the flaws. Hopefully one of these days I'll get a piece of briar that doesn't have pits or flaws. Luck of the draw unless you are buying grade one plateaux, but I know.

Nothing fancy.

Very pleasing pipe!

I like your contrast staining and the way you sand the briar to emphasize the grain.

I uderstand your annoyance for the briar flaws, but it is not easy to find flawless blocks. Sometimes the flaw comes out when the pipe is almost finished and we amateur pipemakers often prefer to be faithful to our project than change it for a flawless outcome.

Thanks guys for your encouraging comments.

Lohengrin, I hear you on the briar. I'm working on a pot that as I started rough shaping it with the dremel, a pit/hole, something opened up but I decided to keep going. It is gradually getting smaller. Here's hoping.

Thanks Gary, you help me stay focused and keep going.

That's a wonderful looking pipe, Chris. I love the grain, the stain, those lovely thick walls and I'd smoke it in a heart beat.
And, like Mr. Shaintiques, I'll love a pit for it's character over a putty fill any day of the week.
Good job.

Grade 3 briar. Yet, it's got tight bird's eye on one side and straight grain on the other. A shame to hide any of that so, great decision. Commercial pipes always seem to highlight pits with putty, I like your presentation.

Looking forward to seeing the "Pot" too.

Somebody send this man a piece of briar! I want to see more.

Thank you all for the kind words. I have briar in transit from Mark Tinsky and Steve Norse at VFH. I'm sure hoping that Canada Post can settle their differences without a strike.
Very big thank you to Mark at American Smoking Pipe and Steve at Vermont Freehand. I contacted both of them on Monday past and explained the situation with Canada Post mentioning that their was two weeks left on the corporations one month cooling off period before any strike action was to be taken. Both of these great guys stepped up to the plate and went the extra mile for me and both orders were processed and out the door the same day.

Briar from both and some required tooling from Steve. Hopefully I can get at least a drill press in the next month or so to add to my meager hand tools. All in good time.

Once again, thank you.
