Ah yes, I'd forgotten about that one! Magnificent.
I received an email from a Charatan "enthusiast" and thought the information would be very beneficial to whomever purchases the pipe...
Karen...I would like to say "what a truly gorgeous pipe with superb grain". This pipe was turned by either Barry Jones or Stan Haney and sandpapered by Joan Nicholson. (Confidential info) was Managing Director between 1967 & 1977 and he would have handled this pipe before it was shipped to Lane ltd. This quality is so rare and this pipe is from the 'heyday' of the finest straight grains coming from the factory. This quality (Achievement) was so rare that before they were shipped they were admired by all the staff in the office and locked in the safe overnight.

The seller sold a Coronation that went even higher.

My pockets don't run that deep, so I'm little hazy on the grading.

What is the difference between an Achievement and a Crown Achievement?

Al, the Coronation had a factory hallmarked gold band. Both are stunning pieces,

went to different buyers if the winners feedback #'s are any indication.

I bought 3-4 Charatans in the 1950s. They all had a red finish. Only the smallest gave a good smoke. Maybe because there was less wood to absorb the awful tasting stain. The big Charatans of that era were awful.
