ss, the 2nd Gen MX has by far the prettiest lines (to me). Look at the subtle kickup at the end of the trunk, the girl curve along the side's top, the (fake) hood bulge, the swoosh from in front of the front wheel to behind the rear. The 99-00s have a stronger block, and one important thing for me: black instrument faces. The 2001s and on have white faces, yuck.
5th gear in the 5-speed is pretty short, about 4K at 80mph (7K redline), but the 6-speed does not have an overdrive, just closer ratios. One advantage to the 5-speed is you can stay in 2nd on an AutoX, with the 6-speed you have to shift to 3rd here and there.
The 3rd Gen to me is not only ugly, but has no spare tire. It comes with a can of fix-a-flat. Would annoy me.

That is gorgeous, particularly in that color/seating!

From a guy who has a 4-speed B, that sounds pleasantly lethargic! I never understood the need for a six-speed in that powertrain, it was simply a marketing gimmick.

Yeah, dark green over tan leather is the proper colour for a little British sports car, and the one I got. All the green ones have the leather. They make one with a black top, but it's not as pretty.
Torque peak of 119lb/ft comes at 5500, rev limiter kicks in at 7200, which is 60mph in 2nd. The six speed would make more sense for me if 6 was taller, kind of 5 with an overdrive. At least it would save gas, and you can always downshift. I'm happy to say, if it stays dry and warm, I get 19mpg every tank. Haven't got my first 18 yet, but I'm working on it! Safety first :)
The thing you'll get with an MX-5 you may not have now is you're probably gentle with your red B, the Miata likes the shit flogged out of it :) The little Ford 1.8L is strong, and the original designer (thanks man), says you need to bounce it off the limiter as often as possible. I don't recommend this in the middle of a corner, when you're using the rear tires.
Wish we lived closer, we could swap for a pipe smoking road trip. It's weird, but in the CRX, people would take you on flat out, in the Miata, they play with you like dolphins.

My best friend in high school and I rebuilt a 1967 MGB back in the '70's, actually it was his car and he did most of the work. He sold the car and bought a Duetto. He's still at it, check out the site bugeyeguy.com.

Oh he77 you guys are right in the middle of everything. I have been looking/considering adding a 2 seat convertible to the fleet. I spent a couple months test driving MG Midgets and MG B's...looking at MG A's and even an MG TD. Out of this group it looks like the MG B is the best option price / performance wise. I love the looks of the MG A and there was one close by I should have pulled the trigger on.
I was a little surprised at how expensive TR 6's are. I also like the looks of the TR3
Even contemplating selling one of my Packards and getting a Morgan that is close by. I would love to have a Morgan.
Looked at some BMW Z3's...they look like a fun car to have but I've never had a BMW that didn't have idiot lights that continuously stayed on...and I am sick of taking my BMW in for service.
The real surprise to me was the MAZDA Miata. I had no idea until last year how big their race program was. I remember watching 3 of them little buggers in 3rd,4th and 5th place towards the end of a couple races last year only to pass the BMW's in the last lap to win the race. The handling on those cars must be awesome because that's what won them the race.
I have a 17 year old son and I need to get a car that he can also drive. The smart choice would be a Toyota Camry for safety's sake. I showed him an M5 to see what he thought about it and he does like it. Just not sure I should cut him lose in a convertible.
Anyway, there is a pretty good possibility I just might pick up an MG B or a Miata this summer for funs sake. Funny how you two are dialed in on them.
Oh, I just noticed your bugeyeguy link. I've been all over that site too...must....resist.....2...seat....convertibles....

The MGB is a great car, classic lines, great handling, smile on your face, joy of driving, not expensive. It's just 60s and 70s technology, and British cars do not have the reputation of being the most reliable ever made.
The Miata is a great car, perfect handling, smile on your face, joy of driving, not expensive, but the 2nd Gen came out in 1998, and is reliable. They did not sell 98s in America, so a 99 is the earliest you can buy.
With both cars, it's about feeling one with the car, and making trips to the grocery store fun.
You can't beat the 50/50 weight distribution on my 99 Miata. Steer the front with the turny wheel, steer the back with the right pedal. You have more options of where to put the car in the first few seconds you have to avoid the wreck. Plus, they're cheaper than a Honda Civic, and take very well to performance mods. There's a reason more Miatas are raced by professional drivers than any other car.
I can't tell you which car is right for you, all I would say is drive a Miata before you make your final decision.

Really enjoyed the contributions on this thread. I may tell the missus that one way to control my PAD would be to get a Miata and turn me loose on the backroads. :puffy:
