Because the tobacco seeds are small I had to over seed the cells while planting. Now that they have grown some I thinned them out today.

What a wonderful thread Phillip! Thank you for sharing. Loved the back-story and all the pics. We live for pics on here ;)

I've been absent awhile but have returned and just wanted to give you some encouragement. I think you’re doing great, and have a great attitude. Keep up the fine work!
I didn't notice that anyone answered your questions above with respect to the tobacco types and labels on your baggies you received from the pipe project. so I'll try to help as much as I can.
First off I'm pretty sure those numbers 3/5, 1/3 have nothing to do with what you are smoking but rather a baggie or perhaps gram count. So that could have been 3 of 5 baggies, or grams, and 1 of 3 baggies or grams for those particular blends that they have to hand out.
Secondly with respect to
When talking about tobacco, the terms: Aromatic, Non-Aromatic, English, Burley....
What do these terms/definitions mean in regards to the classification of different type of tobacco?
You will need to do some serious studying on this subject. It has EVERYTHING to do with what tobaccos you grow. Keep in mind aromatics are made that way through the use of toppings and casings and age. If you ever find yourself "moving on" from aromatics, which is not unusual and more likely than not, then you would be in the non-aromatic category, which for the most part included everything other than aromatics.. duh. But to be specific, English etc. There are many tobacco's that are in most all tobacco blends to some degree, but only the finest and best blends incorporate the correct proportions with the type of cut to achieve that "balance" that all tobacconist strive for. I would highly suggest you follow and read anything you can get your hands on that Greg Pease has written. You can also email him probably and get first rate information on things like... "Greg if you were going to grow your own tobacco to make you own blend, what would YOU grow?" and stuff like that. All the people on here and those that are a part of pipe smoking are always very very helpful and generally go out of their way to help another learn more.
Keep up the great work and great pics!

Hey Philip I just found this thread, very cool pics on everything! The 1 thru 5 over 5 is my way showing the strength of a blend according to P&C's descriptions. They give 1 thru 5 triangles on their site to rate the strength of a blend.

I used to start lots of flats of plants every year, all kinds of veggies and flowers, but my legs made me downsize my garden a lot. It's fun to get into perennials too, cause they're less work and are very cool. Looks like you're having a good time guy, good luck!

I grew Burley and Virginia a few years ago with success. My main concern while growing was bugs, slugs and black mold. Your locale may have different pests but a little advance research will have you prepared. Picking, drying and curing tobacco all have their concerns but research and patience is rewarded. A cheap kiln box can be built or an old refrigerator or freezer with a large crockpot in the bottom to provide humidity and heat works well. Constant humidity and temp control are vital,(thermometer and humidity gauge a must) and a vent at the top that you can control will assist maintaining both. Tons of information is available and I wish you luck. It's an enjoyable journey and one that everyone should take.

Phil, a buddy and I are kicking around the idea of a pipe and cigar club later on this summer and since you are not too far away I thought maybe you would like to come. I will let you know if it gets off the ground.

Wow a lot of post since my last update!
The last week has been busy! I have been sick, had my birthday, and my wife and I are in the process of buying the house we are renting currently. I have been doing lots of yard work cleaning things up around the house and pruning trees and bushes that have been neglected and over grown over the years. Because we are going to need to paint the house and put a new roof on before we will be able to close on the house.
With the help of my brother in law and father in law we took two big loads like this to the dump.

cafbf251-93ea-48a3-9a82-ac7439d6eba2.jpg

I also have been helping my in laws move things off an old family farm to their place and at the same time their sheep have been having babies so I help with that too.
Here is one of the lambs.

There is some old farm equipment out at the old family farm in the shelter belt that we had to move. While helping with that, the Cc pipe that mcitinner1 sent me worked its way out of my back pocket, and unfortunately I was not able to find it! :?
I did find this cool skull while looking for it. I think it is from a fox or a raccoon.

Te other night I was watching through the videos on pipesmagazine’s youtube page. While I was watching I worked on cutting out leather to make some heavy duty aprons for blacksmithing/woodworking or whatever… Anyway, there were a lot of interesting videos with good info on it.

For the tobacco, I thinned them out again. This time to one plant in each cell.

I am going to try to color cure this little bit of the thinned tobacco. We will see what happens.

This is what the grow room looked liked as of this morning.

And here is the hot pepper plants I set aside for my self.

DSC07294.jpg

Today I sent a bunch of the hot pepper plants with my wife to sell in her yarn store. Sounds like a lot of them have gone all ready, which is good because I am running out of space in the house and I need to start tomatoes yet!
On the first day of spring I opened up the tin of Taste of Spring from Sutliff tobacco and had a pipe of that. I think I prefer Taste of Summer to it. Also in smoking I have had more of the Newminster No. 9R Rich Vanilla, and I had my first cigar. My brother in law gave it to me. I do not know what the brand was, but it was small and had the taste of grape. I did not care for it. Especially the tobacco/grape taste that was on my lips after and while smoking it…
monty55,

Thank you for your response. Looks like I have a bit of homework to do in regards to blends!
mcitinner1

Thanks for letting me know about P&C's descriptions! I found their AFQ page on pipes and it looks like it has lots of good articles and videos to watch.

I will have to look in to what to make for a kiln box. Thanks for the good lead ideas! It will be interesting to see what the bugs are like. This journey sure is enjoyable! What was causing your black mold?

Thanks for the invite! I don’t know what summer will bring, but that sounds like fun!
yazamitaz

Glad you like it!
That’s all I can think of for now. I have to catch up on some house work now because I have been neglecting it.

What's new?

I have been busy! Is that really new, IDK? Does not seem like it is, but I guess I have been doing new things...
Currently, I have almost completely shingled my house. Here is a shot from when I was tearing the old shingles off.

11051836_10204910129087722_7198454660218774355_n.jpg

My tobacco plants are getting bigger, and I'm looking forward to getting them in the ground!

11104067_10204927859370968_2132079366_n.jpg

My Amorphophallus konjacs (Aka Voodoo Lily/Corpse Plant) are starting to bloom. My wife is not completely thrilled about them being in the living room because they will smell like mix of rotting flesh and poo... When she asked "Why they are in the living room?" I just let her know it's because she's married to me. That was as good answer as any right? :D

As for peppers, my supper hot ones are fairly big now and I am slowly hardening them off. Today something got into them and they don't looks the best, but they should be fine. The normal hot peppers are coming along well, and the normal sweet bell peppers are just finishing germinating! I have a feeling the summer is going to go fast!

11146528_10204927815049860_6201464004228387398_n.jpg

That's for now. Would appreciate good thoughts and prayer sent my way. I'm working on getting lots of things to fall into place at once, and it is a bit tiring.

Cool, I'm going to be putting my tobacco out this weekend. Mine hasn't had the headstart that yours has had though. Coolpics. This thread reminds me that I need to get pictures of my goats, ha ha. They aren't as cute as the lamb, but they're great manure making machines, ha ha.
I am growing Virginia Gold, Dark Virginia, Del Gold, Rustica, Ishmir, Golden Orinoco, and a few ornamental tobaccos to scatter about the gardens.
Thanks for sharing.

You get more done in a week than I do in a year. Feeling very inadequate. Seriously good thread as noted. Love to see people getting things done. A renaissance man of action.

How many tins worth of tobacco will you be getting from this first crop?

"How many tins worth of tobacco will you be getting from this first crop?"
It is estimated as anywhere from 2oz to 5oz per plant depending how it does.
I don't want to hijack Phil's thread, but I am looking to transplant this weekend. The inch and ahalf of rain has slowed that down though. Being about 40 mi from Phil I suppose it's the same for him.

Max-From what I have read you get about 1/4 lb of dried/cured tobacco from each plant. I will have at least 32 plants. So as long as I don't screw things up I will have about 8lbs worth of tobacco.
Cosmicfolklore- You'll have to share some photos.
Thank you everyone for the encouragement!

I ended up getting 50 transplanted today. Ranging from Va bright leaf to Cuban Crillio. My oldest and youngest helped for a bit but got bored soon
