Was anyone else watching this one? A Comoys 256 is still missing from my collection and this explains why. Sunrise pipes (Comoy's 2nds) are usually in the $30-$60 range. This 256 shape, with no COM topped $200. I thought that I'd ride along till the $75 mark or so, but that didn't last long. I've had a Sunrise pipe before and didn't find the pre-cast stem to be a good feature. $200? Not from my account.

Yeah, that was wild. I did not study the bidding much but it seemed like more than 2 were reaching. Had been watching since the auction start as an awesome shape. I have a Sunrise 283 which I love but it was a bit less! I smell a commission.

Plus, the chamber looked a bit wonky. Almost forgot. Round but not centered? Could just be the photo but I've seen that on other lower tier Comoy's. Still silky smooth feeling briar though I bet.

I was watching too. Thought I might throw in a bid under 100 but when I went back to it and saw it broke the 100 mark I was pretty surprised. Love this shape but $224 seems high. Hopefully the winner will enjoy some great smokes from that beauty.

Thanks Jay, I have a 284 Comoys Tradition (previously sold a 284 The Guidall). If I can get the first line Comoys, that is always my goal. 284's are uncommon, but 256's are on another level. I learned that I don't care much for the pre-molded stems on the 2nds. I may have to settle for a 2nd line on the 256, but I'm a patient man. The differences between those two shapes is pretty suble. The 284 is what I would consider to be a Rhodesian, while the 256 is an Author. Last year,I was in a few bucks of winning this one, but ultimately lost it.

The market is designed to take money from the uneducated; and put it in the pocket of the educated. I heard this quote about the stock market but it works for ebay as well I think

That's a problem with the whole auction concept. You get collectors who feel they need a pipe to round out their rack, and pretty soon they're way above market. Then there are pride and competitive instincts, and pretty soon it's just foolish. You can get some fine examples of estate pipes at $200, considerably better in various ways than this one. Pick your fair price, make the bid, then forget you ever saw it.
