Reloader, I came across this Reborn pipes blog entry and thought of your pipe. Could yours have the same type varnish finish ? I see he uses 99% alcohol to remove some of the peeling varnish, then touches it up with a mahogany stain. I'm not suggesting that just forwarding it to you for further ideas and consideration.

Yes, I tried that and grain alcohol. I think the only thing I haven't tried is lacquer thinner. It was so inexpensive that I may just do some rustication on some of it to hide the peeling finish.

Going by the shape, I would wager it's made by Ropp. As it isn't marked as such perhaps it didn't make the grade visually but of course that doesn't have any bearing on how it smokes.

Hope it turns out to be a good smoker....$2 is a real bargain these days.
