Is it possible to restain a briar pipe? Also, what is the best way to get rid of rim darkening.

1) yes just need to strip and re-stain with dye. 2)your own saliva and q-tips. elbow grease and time. It will come off.or should.

If I'm re-staining a pipe, I'll actually soak it over night in 99% isopropyl alcohol to pull stain as well as loosen oils, tars, gunk, cake, etc...

Pick a pipe you don't love the stain on and just soak that bad boy. You know you want to... Do it for "science".

Lol to pruss. Thanks to all for the great advice. Right after I posted it I saw some threads and links that answered my refinishing questions. Also thanks for the rim darkening tips, will try these soon on an appropriate junker. I've only bought already restored or refreshed estate pipes so was curious from some of you fellows of some things that are beyond and nice wax, buff, and sanitizing. Thanks again. Love this site.

Before sanding the ream you can try to clean it with the backing soda :) But you should be ready to restain - at least the ream if not the whole pipe.
@rothnh It's a shame for me but I wasn't aware that Halcyon wax is for sanded (rusted) pipes. Thanks so much! :)
It's the great site indeed!

I use Arm and Hammer toothpaste with baking soda for cleaning the rims, and a lot of elbow grease, lol. Saliva sounds like a big turn off to most people if you tell them that.
