I don't claim to be an expert smoker or anything (though I do have over a decade of smoking under my belt), but my pipes do not get more than slightly warm to the touch when I smoke, and I have never smoked a pipe so hot that it was uncomfortable in my hand or on my cheek.

I smoke pretty fast and they don't usually get hot. I have a few pipes that smoke hot no matter how I pack or how slow I smoke. When I started everything smoked hot. My cadence has stayed the same, but now things don't get hot anymore. I can't explain that. Sometimes I think the smoking gods make you suffer through the first few years even if your doing everything right. Then one day they decide your worthy and everything works perfect no matter how absent minded you pack or how fast you smoke every bowl is great.
