I picked up a bag from Mark Ryan at the show this weekend based on several people’s recommendations. First I want to say this is in no way a complaint. Mark is a stand up guy and was a pleasure talking with for a few hours. When I got home I quickly opened it to try out. Unfortunately it’s so crispy that it turns to dust if you pinch it. I know he is liquidating everything and supplies are limited. Does anyone know how to reach out to him to see if he has more? I don’t think this bag is going to be good. That is a phenomenal blend. Absolutely phenomenal. Thankfully I stocked up before they quit making it.

As far as supplies being limited, it's more that supplies are non existent.

If you want to keep it, I would jar it as is and rehidrate it in small batches for ready smoking
If I remember correctly this may have been the last bag. Is there a benefit of only rehydrating small amounts at a time? I was thinking about rehydrating the whole bag in batches then jarring.

Wait, Mark is still pushing DR blends? He sold the company a few years ago.

That said, this is how tobacco was traditionally sold, pure tobacco, no water, great stuff. I have about 20 lbs set back. Some of my favorite blends. You just have to smoke slow and savor it. If you are used to the corporate wet stuff, you just have to readjust your smoking style. But, it is some of the tastiest tobacco, IMO.

Ahh ok. I think he was just selling off what little he still had laying around. Great guy and enjoyed hanging out and talking with him. I’ll give it another go. Would you hydrate it at all? Thank you for your feedback!

I’ve had good luck putting an ounce or less in a small bowl and then putting that bowl inside a large Tupperware bowl with a lid. A little distilled water in the Tupperware is all it takes to nicely rehydrate the tobacco in the smaller bowl. You don’t want the little bowl to float around, lol - just a bit of water!

I think you will be surprised. Mark’s blends were super dry to begin with but I always wanted a bit of moisture in my tobacco. Give it a shot!

The most effective way to add the perfect amount of moisture is to pack a bowl, and then put your lips on the bowl and blow backwards through the pipe. just your breath is all you need. Of course, when my wife sees me doing this, she always says, "you're smoking your pipe backwards , dumbass," ha ha.

Agree with those suggesting rehydration of small amounts.

I wish you well. I remember when I was new to this and ordered a bunch of one pound bags of C&D blends on a super sale from SP. Some of the blends came quite dry and I asked similar questions to this. The answer I got was the same. Some blends are dry. Some one told me to be happy I wasn't buying water and that I was getting more tobacco by the pound when dry. lol

I jarred the dry blends up with a little mark on them to show I would have to rehydrate before smoking. That works out. Also, the bowl Idea mentioned above works great. Also does with a decently wet sponge if you are worried about too much water.

Take care.

I like my tobacco on the dry side also. I think I’ll try your breath method.

D&R blends were always sold without the excess water, at the proper smoking moisture for maximum flavor, something with which most pipe smokers are unfamiliar.
That said, it’s also likely been in the bag for at least a couple of years, and will dry out even more in the bag. So it’s quite possible that the contents are dehydrated.
Try smoking it slowly, as has been recommended, but if it isn’t working, then a SLIGHT bit of rehydration might be in order. It should still be quite dry, almost crispy, for smoking.

Glad you were able to get it to smoke well for you. Mark made so many great blends that it is truly a huge loss to pipe smoking that he had to shut down. He is a real hero for saving Perique. I also am one who appreciates the fact that his blends always were on the dry side, perfect for putting right in the pipe and enjoying without any fuss. Like others I just pack a little firmer and slow down my cadence and never had a problem. His S.J. Rimboche is one of my favorite VaPers.
