1st lb purchased after 16yr test.

Well, i started smoking a pipe 16yrs ago now. I've tried probably hundreds of tins. Purchased a few more of the ones i liked and cellared a bit away.
However i finally found something cheap enough and tasty enough to feel like i could smoke it for months on end without hardly a desire to try something else (if i had to, i mean... Im not codger level yet). So today i purchased my 1st pound bag of Sutliff Heavy English.
I know, not a big deal. Not a new blend. Not flashy at all. And I'll soon be purchasing similar quantities of other blends probably, to cellar up for harder times. But i thought it could be useful for newer afficionados to know that sometimes its not necessary to sample everything out there. The good stuff really is readily accessible for a bargain value.

For me, most of the joy of pipe smoking is aimlessly flailing around in this era of nearly unlimited pipe tobacco choice. I love casting as wide a net as possible. From the rare and hard to find @pipestud tins to the Sutliff and C&D limited releases to the European blends I know and love; a huge part of the joy of this hobby is the endless discovery. Maybe once I’ve done this for a few more years, I’ll settle down and buy a pound of something I know I’ll love forever; until then, party on!

It's a good step! I only pick from roughly 5 blends, and only buy pounds these days. I am afraid to try anything new. I'm very plain and basic.

i concur. I wish my cellar had less options and really focused on the fewer blends i really enjoy.

The backbone of my cellar is quart jars stuffed with bulk blends. Mostly Va flakes. I have a few pounds of some ready rubbed VA's too. I'm glad that I learned early on about really good inexpensive tobacco. I still have some favorites that are only in tins, but I could get by for quite a few years quite happily on the bulk bags and boxes I've squirreled away.

No matter what as @Chasing Embers and other's have pointed out, it's never going to get cheaper and sometimes things disappear so you can't go wrong loading up on what you enjoy.

I am starting to cellar deeply on some blends. 45 years in and I'm still learning what I like. I have bought some "new to me" blends in bulk from Estervals recently and I think I might buy more whilst the price is favorable. I had another small delivery today and if i like the blends then I will go large next time I order. 250gm bags from Dan Tobacco are great value.
