Just might might make it there. I have a sister that lives only 15 to 20 minutes away from there. KC is an easy drive from Minneapolis.

Is there a lounge or bar in the casino people hang out in? Like the irish pub that once existed in Vegas?

Couldn't tell you my friend, I've never been there. I'd assume there's a bar, or better yet, belly up to the blackjack table.

So this is the seven day set for 2018. Seems to be a theme going on here, dark stain sandblast black ebonite stem. I’m a bit disappointed by it. Not a whole lot of creativity there. Nobody really pushed the boundaries or challenged themselves with these offerings. After the American Exposition that was out of this world this KC Show Set is a major let down from a collector stand point.
I’m just amazed Nate King’s offering didn’t make the set. He had superb shaping, amazing metalwork accent, and one incredible Bakelite stem. Personally I think Nate had the best entry in the contest.

These 7 pipes were the best 7 pipes on the table...period. This year the judges were tasked with picking traditional princes and traditional princes usually have black or cumberland stems so, for the most part, the entries reflected that.
You mentioned the American Exposition. Take a look at those names and see how many of them actually entered the contest. And of the ones that did enter how many made the set. Again, this year's shape was a traditional prince...not a lot of room for creativity or pushing boundaries so it's really a moot point.
This really bothers me. I understand that we'll never have everyone happy with the outcome of this contest. But I won't have the judges questioned in this way. And I won't get into specifics about why certain pipes did or didn't make the set as I'm not a judge and the decision was not mine. I will, as a GKCPC board member. GKCPC show committee member and second in command of the Carvers Contest, address this situation.
