1959 Bewlay Olde 49

Very happy to have acquired this lightly smoked Bewlay.

Can anyone help pin down the maker? There is no O mark for Orlik so it seems very much like a Sasieni to me.

Very nice Don! Any shape number? I've never seen a Sasieni with "Hand Cut" marked on the stem (and a lovely stem it is) typically see it from Orlik or GBD...
I do know Orlik was making pipes for Bewlay (without the brass stem inlay) in 1959, I have hallmarked examples.

This pipe is marked shape 257.

I have a nice example of a bent Olde 49 Bewlay, shape 169 that I am pretty sure is an Orlik pipe.

I am almost sure that it is an Orlik hand cut stem - the same cut as on my Old Bond Street and Orlik Supreme briars.

I have two Bewlays with those stems. A x24 blast Sansegal and a 010X blast giant and I have always taken them as Orliks.

I also have a 159 Standard with a moulded stem which I think are made by Comoy, because of the waternose on the peg.

Don, the price for that 257 Olde 49 was 33/6 in a catalog from around 1960. A Popular was 14/6 an a De luxe 53/6

Jensen, what was the price for a Straight Grain? This is a hallmarked 1959 Orlik made pipe.

Straight grain ( when available ) 63/6 ! But no pipes with silverband in the catalog.

The Spiral sometimes seen was 39/-

There was a patent Spiral with the patent spiral stinger on Ebay last week, rough shape chewed off bit and I wanted it, but I got bid out.
