I fixed on of those years ago. Mine ended up with a large patch to repair a hole in the stem, (not the manufactured version of a hole on some of them). This one came out way better than mine did. I couldn't tell if the stem was all briar or not, my guess is maybe some sort of pressed briar maybe, the surface sanded and filed almost like it had acrylic in it. Perhaps the coating is what I was noticing.

Maybe it was what's called "stabilized" wood.

Meaning wood that has been pressure injected (for lack of a better term) with plastic.

It's not hard to find, isn't particularly expensive, and is extremely durable:

Interesting, that used to be mine… And no I’m not the one who “lacquered” it. Nice work getting the bite zone cleaned up.

Very cool. I have since seen one on Ebeast that was lacquered... a few that were not. I am guessing some took it on themselves to lacquer as a briar stem would require extra care over the years without it. I, personally, would choose the "extra care" route but that's just me.

Actually the more I look, they are not the same pipe. Mine was cross grained and yours looks mostly birdseye. But the stem damage and lacquer look exactly the same. Mine was equally lacquered and meer lined as well. Look at em side by side and tell me what you think, I did sell mine on eBay a while back....
