Here’s a full scan of my Pipes by Lee catalog (2 parts). It lacks a date, but the 7-point stars make late 1940s most likely. I have all the shapes on pp. 6-8 except the Large Author. I’m guessing this was an early catalog because I have a variety of 7-point shapes that aren’t included. The last couple pages indicate there were store displays available. Note the full page of Lee Strollers as well as a display of Briarlee Strollers toward the back. I have some of the Briarlees, but have never seen a Lee with a Stroller stamp, so that’d be a nice addition to the collection, as would a cigar/cigarette holder. On the Gold Coast I spy stars on the stem…the ones I have don’t have ‘em. More to hunt for.

Great post. There are some very nice shapes in there! I like the 2-94s Vest Pocket Bulldog Round Shank Saddle Bit or a 2-101 Extra Large Bull Moose.

I was told they were mail order only!
The Star Grades may have been.

I am stunned.

That likely was catalog number 1.

All shapes shown in this catalogue are available
as follows:
the ustnumber indicates
the
number
"Stars (and therefore, price), Thus, a one "Star"
pipe
is designated 1-01. The same shane in the two
quality would be 2-0l, and in the three "Star
qualits
3-01, ete.

All "Star
pipes are HAND FINISHED and
and Walnut or Suntan in the one Star" pricerange: in the two"Star price range the finish is "Star.
Grain";
in the three Star price range the unisn 18 a Virgin finish; and in the four and five
priceranges the finishes are Natural-Grain.

—-

I know, I have exactly one very early Two Star that’s marked Star Grain.

I know, that only the first advertisements in newspapers and magazines list a $3.50 One Star

I know, that soon after 1946 Gold Coast was the dollar drug store pipe and Briarlee became an option on mail order Lees.

I know, that most of my Three Stars (maybe 75% of Lees) are not “Virgin” but tan, and some walnut.

Those Lee Star Grades even in that catalog were custom order.

Briarlee was $1 and there were displays.

Gold Coast was $3.50 and there were displays.

And look at all the cigarette holders!

Why, are there no advertisements I’ve ever seen (not catalogs) that say

If your dealer has none, write Lee?

That catalog was not sent to a customer responding to an advertisement.

That was sent to a retail merchant.

Wow.

After I recovered, I read the catalog closer.:)

It plainly states “STAR PIPE BY LEE, which has scored a tremendous hit with pipe smokers all over the world”. This is later on in 1946, because One Stars are advertised. One Stars disappear soon after. And the mail order operation is an established fact. This wasn’t a launch.

5A2C3810-63A2-4AFE-B838-7ED42B6E6CEF.jpegThe custom order pipes are $5 retail Two Stars. This was a merchant’s catalog.

Geez, the $10 Three Stars come in Retail $7.50 for a pair, retail $10 for three, and retail $15 for five !

Damn. Lee was so desperate he was trying to drum up Briarlee and Gold Coast dealers.

I’ll bet if the retailer bought so many Briarlee and Gold Coast displays, he got a deal on $7.50, $10, and $15 Three Star Christmas gift boxes. What else explains it? No dealers price is listed.

Unseen, was a pipe salesman calling on shops and leaving that catalog.

And the dealer’s price sheet is long lost too.

That almost has to be an attempt by Lee to sell to retailers in the fall of 1946 for the 1946 Christmas season.

Croon one, Frankie!

Lee had a huge cache of briar, probably a large bank loan, a brand new factory and the plan was to market gold star pipes.

For $1 there was a Briarlee.

The first Gold Coast pipes were $3.50.

The first One Star Grades were also $3.50.

Why settle for a mere Gold Coast when $3.50 bought the exact same custom shape as the top priced factory pipe on earth, the $25 Five Star?

This explains only early advertisements listing a $3.50 Star Grade One Star.

Why buy a Pontiac if a Buick was the same price, if you custom ordered a Buick?

It’s also neat to know in 1946 the first $15 Four Stars came only in natural finish.

Later on Lee added a tan option.

Four Stars are rare as hen’s teeth.

The first Three Star grades only came in “Virgin”. That had to be a very light stain, one that looked natural.

The 1946 Two Star grades were “Star Grained” stained. I have one, and it’s among the prettiest of all my Lees, stained a reddish brown.

I think Lee was an honest, but scared man.

Oh, I so hope he made a million and cashed in his chips!

We know his company lived until he made and sold this exquisite $25 5 pointed star Five Star.

I’m more convinced than ever, Lee made the switch to a five point star to improve his pipes when the $5 Two Star doubled in retail price.

The rubber stems on the 5 pointed star pipes have noticeably higher polish, even in a Two Star.

That is a 5 pointed star (post 1950) walnut stained $15 Three Star.

A 5 point star era pipe is I think a bit fancier than the average 7 point star era pipe.

Any Two Star Grade always sold for Super Grain money.

Lord (soon to be Baron) Inverchapel made tobacco trade paper headlines in 1946 for buying two unnamed English pipes for $15 each.

Is this one of the two?

And in 1946 Lee made the best and only $25 factory pipes on earth.

I'd like to see the stars on HIS pipes!
