Gigger I was just poking some fun, I live in the interior of Alaska and it doesn't get much worse than that for weather. I have been to Arizona plenty. My grandparents, when they were still with us lived in Mesa and my aunt still does. Too stinking hot for me though. I can't say I like the cold but I do find it easier to deal with than extreme heat. I must say though, for me the clincher is high heat and humidity. Nothing worse than getting out of a shower and being wetter after you've dried off.

gigger48- I spent 4 years in AZ when in the Air Force. I also travel to the southwest many times. I don't mind the dry heat as much as the high humidity and heat.
UPDATE - they closed the schools. And thursday is 'pose to be colder.

They never cancel school here in Fairbanks for cold. When I was a kid it was -58 F and they were still open. Bosses also do not accept cold as an excuse.

gigger48, daimyo, I have no idea of your age, but back in the 50's and 60's, when I was in school, living in the city, there were no school buses. My son hates this story. He's heard it so many times. But, it was cooooold back then also, schools were never cancelled, and we walked. No back packs for books either. We carried our books under our arms, walking in the deep snow, cold, and I walked 3 miles one way to school.
Now, if the temperature hits a certain degree, the schools close. Ya I know the argument.
"But the buses won't start." Or, "The kids who walk 4 blocks could get frost bite."
BS. Cars start. Trucks start. People go to work. Postal workers deliver the mail, power company workers repair broken pipes and power, and the trash gets picked up in that same cold weather.
Now, if a child lives 10 miles from school, obviously they can't walk in that weather. But to close the city schools, when most kids live within walking distance?

I enjoy, and respect that weather. I like the other stuff too.

Besides, it's always good for a story in the pocket.

I'm just glad to be retired! Worked outside for 34 years and I've dealt with it all. I'll never forget working on December 24, 1983. 24 below 0 with 29 TO 41 MPH creating wind chills of -82. No heat in my truck as it was broken and I actually could not see at times because my eyelids froze shut and I had to cup my hands over them until they warmed up so that I could open them again. Turns out I actually burned a hole in the back of my throat from breathing in the extreme cold, got an infection and was out of work for two weeks. I just feel sorry for the homeless and the ass-wipes who don't know shit on how to properly take care of their pets. Well, that and those have to deal with this shit as their jobs such as mailmen, firemen, etc.
I'll never forget when this happened as the news media decided to interview a pizza delivery man of all people! Some freaking jerk who drives around in a warm car, steps out of it to delivery a pizza and then gets back into his heated car and he actually had the freaking audacity to complain just hard and difficult the cold weather was for him!

-18 F in Vermont as I type. Not even thinking about a pipe tonight as there is no smoking in the vacation home. Looks like a good night for more fire and Woodford Reserve.

It's a toasty -2 degrees on the digital thermometer sitting on my desk. Having a bowl of Byzantium and thinking about you guys that don't, won't, can't, smoke in the comfortable, cozy, warm interior of your home tonight. Cheers!

Andy, I'm nuts to. I like the cold. Can't handle heat and humidity. I work better, and have more energy when its cold.
Of course some of you think I'm nuts anyway, and this next statement will help you to realize how batty I am and should confirm your thinking. I don't like the sun either. Nope! Sun's ok if it's somewhere between -30 and 70 degrees. Otherwise, I don't like the heat.
I like it when it rains, and it's cloudy. A cloudy, overcast day excites me, the sunshine when hot, depresses me.
Yup, I'm nuts!!!!!
Frank,
We are two peas in a pod. I feel exactly the same.
I visited the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York a few years ago. God's Country if anyplace can claim that title, wonderful country.
Andy

I hope you're talking Celcius, not Farenheit here!
- 35 (c) in Ottawa today, with the wind chill. We had - 45 on a regular basis, last winter. Just crazy.
Yeah us Canucks know cold. It was -47 with windchill the other day. Good think I smoke indoors. One of our fellow pipers on the forum here who lives in the same city as me just takes the winter off for pipe smoking, which I would do to if I couldn't smoke indoors. I'll probably have him over soon so he can partake in some bowls of smokey goodness in a nice warm house.

boilermakerandy, yes that area is God's country. I'm about an hour north of there. It is also, as you probably found out, wine making area. They have some great wines that compete with any in the world.
