Just got my large dublin today. It does have one small fill but otherwise well made with an open draw. I'll give it a try after work tomorrow.

Well I got my Dux Depose Billiard with Horn today and it's a nice little pipe. It fill the bill for a small short smoke pipe which I was looking for and the draw if free which was one of my concerns. The only concern is the small button, and it is small. Other than that, the pipe is in very good condition, no fills and decent grain. Overall I am pleased and do not regret the purchase.

It looks like varnish to me. I just put a bowlful of PS Balkan Supreme in mine and it afforded a very nice, cool smoke. I think the thick walled bowl and longer stem were mostly responsible for that. Not a bad pipe for the money at all.

It is probably varnish. That was what gave brad a problem, with the varnish bubbling up, although no one else has reported any problems. Varnish isn't necessarily a negative. I have one French Jobey and an Italian Giani, both with a coat of shiny varnish, and instead of being sealed up, they seem to breathe and smoke just fine. They do fine with any blend, and seem to enhance aromatics somewhat, and do fine with non-aromatics (most of what I smoke) as well. tuold, that's a fine lithe Dublin, a real French take on the shape. I kept shopping these pipes, but finally ordered a Genod bent egg shape instead, as a real early Francophile shape. It cost a little more, but seemed to answer the "need."
