I smoke 1Q a few times a week, and I dont agree Lawrence, I do agree about the cut tho, similar apearance but not exact. But flavor wise I believe CBR is a dead ringer for 1Q. I dont like it for the goopyness, and here it costs more than 1Q, but I've smoked it i a pinch

I'm actually looking at my CB Royal and my Lane 1Q and they are pretty much identical in aroma, cut, ribbon width, etc: thin ribbon and rough cut black.
Not the best pic, but this is what I am looking at.

Its hard to see in the picture I took, but both have thin ribbon cuts about 1.2mm in width. The black leaves are rough cut in odd shapes but both have roughly the same range of size and shape.
In fact as both piles sit in front of me on my lunch napkin, I'm beginning to forget which was which....

I dont like it for the goopyness

That maybe the reason for my perceived differences in appearance.

I have smoked CBR many times in the past, but only because CBW wasn't available.

As for the "dead ringer" in taste... not to my mind.... for me it's probably the PG.

Here is a more detailed photo of Lane Limted 1Q next to Captain Black Royal, that I have in front of me as I type:

I kind of wonder if Lane is the bulk, and Captain Black is the slightly repacked and perhaps preserved mainstream market brand. Much like an Intel i7, i5, and i3 are actually the same processors except that the i5 is crippled to a degree, and i3 crippled even more. i5 and i3 are sold as lower performance processors because it gives something in marketing by which to compare and boost sales of the higher performance (non-crippled) product: the i7. This was the marketing concept behind the celeron.
I can definitely see marketing creating an attitude in favor of the superior lane product while offering a "lower grade" for average users, despite the product being virtually identical, especially given the fact that the two are produced by the same manufacturer.

Oh and I would guess the PG in the CBR is the main difference aside from packaging, because the Captain black while identical in cut and aroma does seem to be slightly goopier, which would make sense for a product intended to sit on shelves where less care might be given to them.
