Ok so I have read its been confirmed by a Lane Limited rep that 1Q is CBR without preservitives. I have also read that Captian Black regular, royal and lite are natural and one of only a handful of tobaccos that have no chemical additives. Soooo, what do they use as a preservitive in the capitain black label tobaccos?

I'm pretty sure I have seen it somewhere else, regardless, like the commercial states "they can't put anything on the Internet if its not true" lol

Not to be rude, my friend, but thet description on that site is not worth a damn.
There is definitely propylene glycol and artificial sweeteners along with artificial flavours in Captain Black AND the Lane equivalents. (There is not really that much difference between them)
All pipe tobacco is heavily processed, but that is why it is so palatable compared to other forms of tobacco.
These aromatics, however, are bigger offenders than many Virginia, Burley, or "English" blends on the market. These tobaccos tend to be much more subtle and they are more likely to use natural ingredients. (Such as liquorice or molasses) Still, there is likely some sort of humectant or antifungal in every single brand on the market, and they do not grow these on trees I assure you!

That web site describes CB as "one of the best tobaccos ever made." so I'm a little beyond 'skeptical'.

CB was my first tobacco, and was almost my last if you must have a over the counter tobacco MacBaren Vanilla Cream takes the win for me.
i havent tried Lane 1Q yet but its on route i truly hope that it doesnt taste like CB royal cause that stuff was horrid to me.

In my opinion I think 1Q is quite good and CB to a goopey mess. I personally wouldn't compare the 2. They may taste similar but certainly don't smoke similar to me.
Smokey if you want to try some let me know and we can make some kind of swap. I've got maybe a pound of the stuff. It's a great all day smoke.

Guys, I am seriously blown away by people saying that the Lane blends are nothing like the Captain Black blends...
I allow that we all have taste differences but there are serious similarities going on - dare I say, obvious likenesses!
RLP-6 and CBW are so close it is not even funny. The bulk may have a slightly different cut (I can't recall) and the flavour may be a smidgen lighter (80% flavouring instead of 90%) but it is fundamentally the same stuff to my tastes.
I am not knocking anybody for their choices but to me I don't see why you would keep both in your rotation. Maybe there is something I am not sensing?

Thanks Mike, very generous but I gratefully decline.
I don't really like the stuff - I was mostly expressing my surprise that people see so many differences between what I determine to be nearly identical blends.
I cut my teeth with CBW but after a couple of pouches I moved on and never looked back.
Recently, though, I tried RLP-6 as I got a little nostalgic about that vanilla/marshmellow smell, but when I began to smoke it I had no desire to even finish the bowl. It was just too light for me - I will never buy either again.
I don't really care about the "aroma" aspect of aromatics - I am looking for stronger tastes than that.
Same thing with the codger burleys - despite a brief flirtation, I never really took a liking to them. They are nice enough but they are not special enough for me to justify smoking them when I go for that daily bowl...

After years of smoking Green Sail mixed with 4 square curlies, I stopped smoking for about 20 years. I came back about 5 years ago and couldn't get either brand, so I experimented. At the moment, 1q is my go-to tobacco -- if anyone wants to trade to Canada, I'm happy to oblige! I've a collection of various aromatics and could exchange a complete list in PM.

I agree with you 100%. I mentioned once to a member on another pipe forum that 1Q and CB Royal were so close in taste and appearance that I would not be surprised if 1Q was really just CB Royal in bulk form. I also mentioned that, imo, if someone swapped out their bowl of 1Q with a bowl of CB Royal, most would never know. I received a very, VERY angry PM from said member attacking not only my taste in tobaccos but my sexuality and ended with the entertaining assertion that I was just a "poser" and should leave the pipe to "real" pipe smokers.
The funny thing is, I don't think he was necessarily angry over my comparing 1Q to Royal, but rather, the idea that he would ever smoke CB Royal and potentially wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Some people I think are just too hung up on the "OTCs are crap" mentality. Like society would shun them if they were ever caught smoking one.
By the way, the same member posted a thread defending pipes made of brylon stating that his Yellow-Bole was his best smoker...two weeks later he posted another thread asserting that he would never smoke a pipe that cost less than $400 and anybody that did was wasting their money.
Some peoples children...

I have smoked both 1Q and CBR and I found no difference between them. I tried RLP-6 and found it was the same as CBW. Same tast and same appearance maby a little lighter on PG but the IQ and RLP-6 had some PG. I am not knocking them, I enjoy a bowl of CBW or CBR when I have a taste for a sweet bowl, but I have had people who smoke 1-Q really look or talk down their nose at me when they found out that I smoked CBR. It gave me a good laugh. I just let them think what they wish.

I know this thread is a little older... but I just happened on this discovery as well. Captain Black Royal seemed identical though perhaps more sticky to Lane Limited 1-Q...
and then I noticed something that doesnt seem to be mentioned on this thread....

The Captain Black Royal (blue) I have in front of me has "LANE LIMITED" prominently displayed on the label....
I found that the Scandinavian Tobacco Group (parent company for Lane and Captain Black) actually describes Lane Bulk RLP-6 to Captain Black White
http://www.stglanepipe.com/
just some stuff to confirm the connection... :)

I'm in PG camp for the OTC difference.
As for 1Q being the same thing as CBR without the preservatives. I don't believe it.

To my mind CBW is closer.

One other aspect that hasn't been mentioned yet is the two don't even remotely resemble each other in appearance/cut.

1Q is a thin ribbon cut, CBR isn't.
1Q while not earth shattering in it's complexity or taste it definitely is an excellent 'go-to/walking around' smoke... CBR not so much.
That's just my opinion.
